听力原文: In this lesson, I want to talk about the history of The White House. At first, most Americans didn't think there was anything particularly special about the White House. Few had ever seen it or had any idea what it looked like, and even the families who lived there found it completely inadequate. When it was built, the White House was the largest house in the country and it remained so until after the Civil War. But it served so many different purposes that little of it was available for the First Family to actually live in. The first floor, or "State Floor" was made up entirely of public rooms; and the president's offices, which where staffed by as many as 30 employees, took half of the second floor up. The First Family had to get by with the eight or fewer second-floor rooms that were left. By Lincoln's time, the situation was intolerable. The White House was open to visitors; office seekers, and the merely curious had no difficulty making their way upstairs from the official rooms on the first floor. Lincoln was so uncomfortable with the situation that he had a private corridor constructed. He also received a $ 20, 000 appropriation to improve the furnishings of the White House. The new furnishings did not last for more than a few years. When Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, the White House fell into disarray. No one really supervised the White House during' the first five weeks.

听力原文: The traditional procedure of taking attendance at the start of the lesson may help a new teacher create a sense of routine and structure, but it isn't the best way to start the class. New teachers need to develop classroom procedures for how and when to take attendance, as this is an important part of classroom organization.

Taking attendance after the teacher has provided some input and the students are ready to start the activity can be much more effective. Since students have already connected With the academic focus of your lesson plan, they won't be distracted when you do take attendance. Teachers do not necessarily need to call out their names. Just a simple head check should take you only a few minutes.

Teachers should ideally get to know the students' names quickly in order to build a positive and direct relationship.' Ice breaker activities during the first few days of school help to get to know the students' names. This can be very helpful to a new teacher, especially when there are more than two identical names or similarly sounding names.

听力原文:Last week we discussed the problem of rising prices, or, in the economist's terms

听力原文: Last week we discussed the problem of rising prices, or, in the economist's terms, inflation. We noted that, during periods of inflation, all prices and incomes do not rise at the same rate. Some incomes rise more slowly than the cost of living, and a few do not rise at all. Other incomes rise more rapidly than the cost of living.

We concluded that persons with fixed incomes as, for example, the elderly who depend upon pensions, and persons with slow-rising incomes as, for example, an employee with a salary agreed to in a long-term contract, will be most seriously affected by inflation. Please recall that while their dollar incomes stay the same, the cost of goods and services rises, and in effect, real income decreases; that is, they are able to purchase less with the same amount of money. We also talked about the fact that stockholders and persons with business interests and investments would probably benefit most from inflation, since high prices would increase sales receipts, and profits would likely rise faster than the cost of living.

And now, before we begin today's lecture, are there any questions about the term "inflation"?

(30)

A.To introduce the concept of inflation.

B.To discuss the causes of inflation.

C.To review last week's lesson on inflation.

D.To argue in favor of inflation.
