听力原文: The traditional procedure of taking attendance at the start of the lesson may help a new teacher create a sense of routine and structure, but it isn't the best way to start the class. 听力原文:The traditional American family used to have a working father, a housewife-mother

听力原文: The traditional American family used to have a working father, a housewife-mother, and two or three children. But in the last 25 years, this picture has changed. Now we have many different kinds of families and living situations besides this traditional one. For example, there are many single mothers and single fathers who are raising children by themselves. There are married couples who decide that they don't want any children. Sometimes adult children who have been living alone for a long time come back and live with their parents again. You can also find groups of older people sharing a house in order to save money. And there are many other examples of new types of families in this country.

Why has the traditional family changed so much? Well, the reasons are both social and economic. First, as you know, the divorce rate is high in our culture; as a result, we have many single-parent families. Second, there is unemployment among young adults. If they cannot find a job, many times they return home and live with their parents again. But of course the most important reason for the changes in the American family is all American women are now working or looking for work. This means that more than half of all American homes do not have a full-time homemaker any more.

(23)

A.Traditional American family.

B.Modern American family.

C.Women's role in American family.

D.Changes in the American families and reasons.

听力原文: Today school children in many countries have high rates of failing eyesight. Two methods have been proposed to prevent near-sightedness, one Western and one Chinese. The Western method was developed by Mr. Bates, a British actor, in the early part of last century. He trained people to relax their eyes frequently during a period of intense reading. His methods included covering open eyes with the palms of the hands and looking at distant objects by moving the eyes from side to side instead of staring at them. Bates also encouraged school children to look frequently at a calendar on the wall of the classroom to relax their eyes. A famous British writer even wrote a book on the beneficial effects of the Bates' method for his vision.

The traditional Chinese method involves pressing certain points around the eyes with the fingers. This also relaxes excessive tension in eye muscles, it is best done by doctors trained in traditional Chinese medicine, but it can also be done by students themselves.

Teachers and parents should encourage pupils to relax their eyes frequently while reading and studying.

听力原文: One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own lifestyles. In more traditional societies, when children grow up,. they are expected to live in the same area as their parent, to marry people that their parents know and approve of, and often to continue the family occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry--or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents.

In our upwardly mobile society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the ambitions that parents have for their children are another cause of the diversion between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.

Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society, the knowledge of a lifetime may become dated overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities.

A.one.

B.Two.

C.Three.

D.Four.

听力原文: Since the 1960s, the English diet has become more diverse; the English now eat a wide variety of European and Asian foods. Many traditional foods such as beef and potatoes have given way to poultry and pasta (面食) dishes. Fast food bas also become more available, and hamburger restaurants now rival the traditional fish-and-chip shops in popularity. Numerous Chinese and Indian restaurants and pizza houses provide take-away service, and many pubs serve anything from snacks to fun meals as well as alcoholic beverages. Traditional English dishes include roost beef and Yorkshire pudding and steak and kidney pie.

The English generally eat three meals a day. A traditional English breakfast consists of any or all of the following: bacon, sausages, grilled (烤炙的) or fried tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs, or toast. Black pudding (blood pudding) may also appear on the menu. However, fewer people now eat a cooked breakfast on a regular basis, preferring various combinations of carnal, toast, juice or fruit, and tea or coffee. The midday meal is usually referred to as lunch and the evening meal as dinner or, when it is less formal, as supper. Working-class people tend to call the midday meal dinner and the meal they have in the early evening "tea." The tradition of afternoon tea, when tea, biscuits, and cakes are enjoyed at about 4 pm, has declined. Similarly, many people no longer have more than a light lunch or snack in the middle of the day.

(26)

A.Beef and potatoes.

B.European and Asian foods.

C.Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.

D.Steak and kidney pie.

听力原文: In this century the traditional American family is constantly faced with the threat of breakdown. Some sociologists suggest that one little-noticed cause may be the introduction of the TV dinner.

Before the appearance of television sets, the American dinner was a big event for the family, for in many homes dinner time may he the only time when everyone got together. A typical dinner was usually in three stages. In the preparation stage, the children and father frequently helped with table setting while mother put the last touches on the roast. In the eating stage, family members shared the day's experiences and mere food was consumed. In this stage families got to know one another and made joint decisions around the dinner table, and thus the family solidarity was reinforced. In the cleaning-up stage, children or father again gave their hands, so that the significance to the home community was clear. Unfortunately, all of these have been erased by a product—the television set.

By the beginning of the 1980s, the typical American family dinner is just twenty minutes long. The speed-up of this once leisurely experience is clearly connected to the overall pace of modem life and maybe a model of the modern life is the TV dinners—meals designed to be consumed between the opening and closing credits of a half-hour program. The once family affair has now become nothing more than the use of a fork and knife.

听力原文: Not long ago, some of you may have read about the team of mountain climbing scientists who helped to recalculate the elevation of the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. Of course the elevation of Mount Everest was determined many years ago using traditional surveying methods. But these scientists wanted to make a more precise measurement, using a new method that takes advantage of recent advances in technology; it's called the Glob al Positioning System. The Global Positioning System uses 24 satellites that circle the earth. Each of the satellites is constantly sending out signals, and each signal contains important information that can be used to determine the longitude, latitude and elevation at any point on the earth’s surface. Well in order to use the system to calculate a mount of Everest's elevation, scientists need to put a special receiver on the summit to receive signals from the satellites. The problem with this was that in the past, the receivers were much too heavy for climbers to carry. But now these receivers have been reduced to about the size and weight of a hand-held telephone, so climbers were able to take the receiver to the top of the Everest, and from there, to access the satellite system signals that would allow them to determine the precise elevation. And it turns out that the famous peak is actually a few feet higher than us previously thought.

(33)

A.The advantages of traditional surveying methods.

B.Using satellites to communicate with mountain climbers.

C.Obtaining new information about a mountain.

D.Controlling satellites from the top of a mountain.
