听力原文: In all languages there are different levels of formality and informality in talking to other people, The language and speech forms you use in talking to family members and friends are not the same as those you use in talking to strangers. The level of language you use in talking to strangers is more formal and usually contains more polite forms. In talking with strangers in English, people sometimes use extra-polite forms to show special courtesy.

In a dialogue, for example, someone says, "Would you be good enough to mm the radio down a bit7" (Instead of "Turn the radio down, please. ") If you used this extra-polite form. with a member of your family or with a close friend, it would seem very peculiar! However, when you use an extra-polite expression like "Would you be good enough'"" or "Would you be so kind as to…" with a stranger, you are trying to be very polite and courteous.

(30)

In addition, the way of thinking and the style. of talking among related languages is similar.

The Indo-European language family includes most of the languages that are spoken throughout Europe, languages such as English, French, and Greek. 听力原文: How people first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that people, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.

The power of words, then, lies in their associations--the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meanings for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express those thoughts in words which appeal to our minds and emotions. This charming use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.

(26)

A.The origin of language is a legend handed down from the past.

B.The origin of language is a matter that is hidden or secret.

C.The origin of language is a question difficult to answer.

D.The origin of language is a problem not yet solved.

听力原文: Culture means the general way of life of a people. This simple definition implies that culture refers to the customs, traditions, social habits, values, beliefs, language, ways of thinking and daily activities of a people. It also includes the history of civilization. In tile broad sense, there are two types of culture, that is, material culture and spiritual culture. Material culture is concrete and observable, while spiritual culture is implicit and abstract.

Because human language is a direct manifestation of culture, learning a second language involves learning a second culture. For the teacher of a second language, he or she should make sure to develop the students' awareness and knowledge of the culture of the target language they are learning. This includes understanding the values of the target culture, acquiring a command of the etiquette of the target culture and understanding the differences between the target culture and the students' own culture. As students progress through a foreign language program, it is expected that they will increase their awareness of the cultural characteristics of the speakers of the language under study. This broadened cultural knowledge may touch on all aspects of culture: the people's way of life as well as the geographic, historical, economic, artistic, and scientific aspects of the target society. We know that each culture has different etiquette patterns. And therefore, in a foreign language course, students should learn the appropriate etiquette patterns expected of the people living in the country where the target language is spoken. Students should also learn how to interpret unfamiliar cultural conventions and how to act appropriately when communicating with the persons of the foreign culture.

(26)

A.Artistic and economic.

B.Concrete and observable.

C.Scientific and historical.

D.Implicit and abstract.

听力原文: Let children learn to evaluate their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people's. In the same way, when children learn to do all the other things, for example, to walk, run, climb, ride a bicycle, they learn to do them without being told. They compare their performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his own mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him as If we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he became dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children, what this word means, what answer is to that problem, whether it is a good way to say or do this or not.

If it is a matter of right answers, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can't find the way to get the right answer. Let's end this nonsense of grades, exams, marks. Let's throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.

(23)

A.They learn to do them by being corrected all the time.

B.They learn to do them by being taught by skilled people.

C.They learn to do them through comparison and discovery.

D.They learn to do them with the help of other children.

Must children start school when they are 5? At the age of 11, they move on to regular high schools, known as secondary schools.

At the age of 16, students take an examination called the GCSE(General Certificate of Secondary Education). All students are tested in mathematics, English literature, English composition, science, history or Classics, one modern language, and one other subject, such as art or computer studies.
