听力原文: Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Kentucky on February 12, 1809. When he was a small boy, his family moved to file frontier of Indiana. Here, his mother taught him to read and write.

When Lincoln was a young man, his family moved to the new state of Illinois. Lincoln had to earn a living at an early age, but in his leisure time he studied law. He soon became one of the best known lawyers in the state capital at Springfield, Illinois. It was here that Lincoln became famous for his debates with Stephen A. Douglas on the subject of slavery.

In 1860, Lincoln was elected President of the United States. He was the candidate of the new Republican Party. This party opposed the creation of new slave states. Soon after his election, some of the Southern states withdrew from the Union and set up the Confederate States of America. This action brought on the terrible Civil War which lasted from 1861 to 1865.

On January 1, 1863, during the war, Lincoln issued his famous Emancipation Proclamation. In 1865, after the war ended, the Thirteenth Amendment was added to the Constitution of the United States. This amendment put an end to slavery everywhere in the United States.

Early in 1865, the Civil War came to an end with the defeat of the South by the North. Only a few days after the end of the war, Lincoln was shot by an actor named John Wilkes Booth. The President died on April 14, 1865. In his death, the world lost one of the greatest men of all time.

听力原文: I was 9 years old when I found out my father was ill. It was 1994, but I can remember my mother's words as if it were yesterday: "Carol, I don't want you to take food from your father, because he has AIDS. Be very careful when you are around him."

AIDS wasn't something we talked about in my country when I was growing up. From then on, I knew that this would be a family secret. My parents were not together anymore, and my dad lived alone. For a while, he could take care of himself. But when I was 12, his condition worsened. My father's other children lived far away, so it fell to me to look after him.

We couldn't afford all the necessary medication for him, and because Dad was unable to work, I had no money for school supplies and often couldn't even buy food for dinner. I would sit in class feeling completely lost, the teacher's words were drowned as I tried to figure out how I was going to manage.

I did not share my burden with anyone. I had seen how people reacted to AIDS. Kids laughed at classmates who had parents with the disease. And even adults could be cruel. When my father was moved to the hospital, the nurses would leave his food on the bedside table even though he was too weak to feed himself.

I had known that he was going to die, but after so many years of keeping his condition a secret, I was completely unprepared when he reached his final days. Sad and hopeless. I called a woman at the nonprofit National AIDS Support. That day, she kept me on the phone for hours. I was so lucky to find someone who cared. She saved my life.

I was 15 when my father died. He took his secret away with him, having never spoken about AIDS to anyone, even me. He didn't want to call attention to AIDS. I do.

(30)

A.He told no one about his disease.

B.He worked hard to pay for his medication.

C.He depended on the nurses in his final days.

D.He had stayed in the hospital since he fell ill.

听力原文:M: Professor Murphy, can you spare a few minutes?

W: Actually, I'm on my way to an appointment with a student, so please make this quick.

M: My name is Josh Ryan, and I'm in your Classical Political Theory class at 2:00.

W: Oh, yes. I recall now. You always ask excellent questions about the lecture. I can tell that you consistently do the readings for the day. What can I do for you, Josh?

M: I'm very interested in the works of John Locke, but the textbook didn't go into detail about him. Would you kindly suggest where I can find supplemental reading in this field?

W: You're in luck. I wrote my doctoral essay on Locke, so I have a whole library on his writings. I'll put together a reading list, and you can look at which specific books you are interested in. I'll bring the list with me to class tomorrow. Then, choose a few books, and I'll bring those particular books to the following class so you can borrow them.

M: Thank you very much, Professor Murphy. I didn't expect this much help!

W: I'm always pleased to help an enthusiastic student. I hope that you enjoy Locke's writings and consider majoring in polities. You will learn about many different political philosophies that might interest you.

M: Yes, I'm definitely considering it.

(20)

A.Because he had some problems with the readings.

B.Because he wanted to change classes.

C.Because he was thinking about becoming a politics major.

D.Because he wanted additional reading on a topic.

听力原文: My father was 44 and knew he wasn't going to make it to 45. He wrote me a letter and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life.

Since the day I was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. One part always stands out. "Right now, you are pretending to be a time-killer. But I know that one day, you will do something great." Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me permission to believe in myself: "You will do something great." He didn't know what that would be, and neither did I, but at times in my life when I've felt proud of myself, I remember his words and wish he were here so I could ask, "Is this what you were talking about, Dad? Should I keep going?"

A long way from 12 now, I realize my father would have been proud when I made any progress. Lately, though, I've come to believe he'd want me to move on to what comes next: to be proud of, and believe in, someone else. It's time to start writing my own letters to my children. Our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had. Our kids don't hold back because they're afraid to fail — they're only afraid of failing us. They do not worry about being disappointed. Their fear — as mine was until my father's letter — is of being a disappointment.

Give your child permission to succeed. If you don't have children, then write a letter to someone who looks up to you. You know who they are. They're writing for you to believe in them. I always knew my parents loved me. But trust me: That belief will be more complete, that love will be more real, and their belief in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts: "Don't worry; you'll do something great." Not having that blessing from their parents may be the only thing holding them back.

Questions 26 to 29 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26. What happened to the speaker as mentioned in the passage?

27. According to the speaker, what are children afraid of?

28. What do we know about the speaker from the passage?

29. What is the main purpose of the passage?

(33)

A.He lost his father when he was young.

B.He worked hard before he read his father's letter.

C.He asked his father's permission to believe in himself.

D.He knew what his father wanted to do from the very beginning.

听力原文: Abraham Lincoln's father, Thomas Lincoln, was born in Virginia in 1778. In 1781 the family moved to Kentucky. He became a skilled carpenter, and he was never short of food. At one time he owned two farms. He always owned one or more horses.

On June 12, 1806, Thomas Lincoln married Nancy. She came from a very poor Virginia family. She had no education and signed her name with an X after their marriage. Thomas Lincoln earned his living as a carpenter and handyman. In 1807 a daughter, Sarah, was born. On February 12, 1809, in a log cabin that Thomas Lincoln had built, Abraham was born.

When Abraham Lincoln was two, the family moved to another farm. Life was lonely and hard. There was little time for play. Most of the day was spent hunting, farming, hashing, and doing farm duties. In 1816 the Lincolns decided to move to Indiana, where the land was surveyed and sold by the government.

In the winter of 1816 the Lincolns took their small property, settled in Indiana. Because it was winter, Thomas Lincoln immediately built a simple, three-sided shelter flat served as home until he could build a log cabin. A fire at the open end of the shelter kept the family warm. At this time southern Indiana was a heavily forested wilderness. Lincoln described it as a "wild region, with many bears end other wild animals in the woods."

Nancy died on October 5, 1818 because of some serious disease. The next year, Thomas Lincoln went to Kentucky, and married Sarah Bush Johnston, a widow with three children. Abe Lincoln was very much fond of his kind stepmother.
