W: Just looking at the lights. I like to look at the city at night.

M: It's a wonderful party. Everyone is standing around piano and singing, Do you want to join us?

W: I'd rather stay out here for a few minutes. Looks down where I'm pointing.

M: I don't see anything special.

W: That's where I used to live when I was a child.

M: What kind of neighbourhood was it?

W: A very poor one. Everyone was supposed to work hard and end up with a house in the suburbs.

M: But you've ended up with an apartment in the sky.

W: Yes, I don't want to lose it. I worked hard for this apartment.

M: I think that means that all of us had better go home soon, so that you can get a little sleep.

听力原文:W: Hi, Zach.

M: Hey, Lisa. What are you doing here?

W: I work here on weekends. How come you decided to come to the travel agency? Planning a trip?

M: Yeah, well, you know our breaks are coming, and I need a quick getaway trip somewhere.

W: Well, someone's got the money to burn. But we hardworking students need a break too.

M: I'm going to tell you upfront Lisa. It's not what you think. I'm on a tight budget like everyone else here but I have to get out of this town for a while.

W: Where to?

M: Florida. I'll go see a Miami Dolphin football game.

W: And you need a flight for next week? Well, you are the one who leaves things to the last minute but hmm.., let me take a look at the screen... United's got one to Miami, but a bit expensive, so let me see if there is anything else available.

M: Preferably below $400 for return, can you swing it?

W: One by Phoenix Air for $350. It's a small plane though. Are you sure you don't want me to check again for other flights? It would only take a second.

M: No, that sounds within my range.

W: All tight. Just let me phone in and confirm the times.

Translate the following into Chinese.

Attention to detail is something everyone can and should do especially in a tight job market. Bob Grossley, a human-resources expert notices this in the job applications that come across his desk every day. “It’s amazing how many candidates eliminate themselves.” He says.

“Resume(简历) arrive with stains. Some candidates don't bother to spell the company’s mane correctly. On seeing such a mistake, I eliminate the candidate,” Crossley concludes. “If they cannot take of these details, why should we trust them with a job?”

Can we pay too much attention to detail? Absolutely. Perfectionists struggle over little things at the cost of something larger they work toward. “To keep from losing the forest of the trees”, says Charles Garfield, associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco, “we must constantly ask ourselves how the details we’re working on fit into the larger picture. If they don't, we should drop them and move to something else”.

Knowing where we want to go helps us judge the importance of every task we undertake.Too often we believe what accounts for others’ success is some special secret or a lucky break(机遇). But rarely is success so mysterious. Again and again, we see that by doing little things within our grasp well, large rewards follow.

"Opinion" is a word that is used carelessly today. It is used to refer to matters of taste
, belief, and judgment. This casual use would probably cause little confusion if people didn't attach too much importance to opinion. Unfortunately, most do attach great importance to it. "I have as much right to my opinion as you to yours," and "Everyone's entitled to his opinion," are common expressions. In fact, anyone who would challenge another's opinion is likely to be branded intolerant.

Is that label accurate? Is it intolerant to challenge another's opinion? It depends on what definition of opinion you have in mind. For example, you may ask a friend, "What do you think of the new Ford cars?" And he may reply, "In my opinion, they're ugly." In this case, it would not only be intolerant to challenge his statement, but foolish. For it's obvious that by opinion he means his personal preference, a matter of taste. And as the old saying goes, "It's pointless to argue about matters of taste."

But consider this very different use of the term. A newspaper reports that the Supreme Court has delivered its opinion in a controversial case. Obviously the justices did not state their personal preferences, their mere likes and dislikes. They stated their considered judgment, painstakingly arrived at after thorough inquiry and deliberation.

Most of what is referred to as opinion falls somewhere between these two extremes. It is not an expression of taste. Nor is it careful judgment. Yet it may contain elements of both. It is a view or belief more or less casually arrived at, with or without examining the evidence.

Is everyone entitled to his opinion? Of course, this is not only permitted, but guaranteed. We are free to act on our opinions only so long as, in doing so, we do not harm others.

Which of the following statements is TRUE, according to the author?

A.Everyone has a right to hold his own opinion.

B.Free expression of opinions often leads to confusion.

C.Most people tend to be careless in forming their opinions.

D.Casual use of the word "opinion" often brings about quarrels.

听力原文: The quest for Success always begins with a target. As Yogi Berra once said, "You got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get them." Too many people wander through life like sleepwalkers. Each day they follow familiar routines, never asking, "What am I doing with my life?" And they don't know what they're doing because they lack goals.

Goal-setting is focusing on the will to move in a certain direction. Begin with a clear conception of what you want. Write down your goals and date them—put them into words clarifies them. Rather than concentrate on objects to acquire and possess, focus on fulfilling your desires to do, to produce, to contributegoal—setting that yields the true sense of satisfaction we all need.

It's important to visualize yourself accomplishing your goal. While losers visualize the penalties of failure, winners visualize the rewards of success. I've seen it among athletes, entrepreneurs and public speakers.

I've done it myself. I was terrified of air travel. I had read too many articles describing crash scenes and imagined these scenes vividly. Friends quoted statistics contrasting air and highway safety, but it made no difference. I had programmed myself, without realizing it, to stay off planes. Then one summer I had the opportunity to fly on a private plane with friends to a resort. I didn't want to miss out on a great vacation. The Issue of Package

Maybe everyone has such an experience that you have to unwrap several layers of packaging when you enjoy a piece of candy. But this overuse of wrapping is not confined to luxuries. It is becoming increasingly difficult to buy anything that is not done up in beautiful wrapping.

The package itself is of no interest to the shopper, who usually throws it away immediately. So why is it done? Some of it, like the cellophane on meat, is necessary, but most of the rest is simply competitive selling. This is absurd. Packaging is using up scarce energy and resources and messing up the environment.

Recycling is already happening with milk bottles which are returned to the dairies, washed out,and refilled. But both glass and paper are being threatened by the growing use of plastic. More dairies are experimenting with plastic bottles.

The trouble with plastic is that it does not rot. Some environmentalists argue that the only solution to the problem of ever increasing plastic containers is to do away with plastic altogether in the shops, a suggestion unacceptable to many manufacturers who say there is no alternative to their handy plastic packs.

It is evident that more research is needed into the recovery and reuse of various materials and into the cost of collecting and recycling containers as opposed to producing new ones. Unnecessary packaging, intended to be used just once, and make things look better so more people will buy them, is clearly becoming increasingly absurd. But it is not so much a question of doing away with packaging as using it sensibly. What is needed now is a more advanced approach to using scarce resources for what is, after all, a relatively unimportant function.

"This overuse of wrapping is not confined to luxuries. " (Line 2, Paragraph 1) means __________. 查看材料

A.more wrapping is needed for ordinary products

B.more wrapping is used for luxuries than for ordinary products

C.too much wrapping is used for both luxury and ordinary products

D.the wrapping used for luxury products is unnecessary

14 year-old. That was me in 1940 -- the youngest and smallest baggage boy at New York City's Pennsylvania Railway Station.

After just a few days on the job, I began noticing that the other fellows were overcharging passengers. I'd like to join them, thinking," Everyone else is doing it."

When I got home that night, I told my father what I wanted to do. "You give an honest day's work," he said, looking at me straight in my eyes. "They are paying you. If they want to do that, you let them do that."

I followed my father's advice for the rest of that summer and have lived by his words ever since.

Of all my jobs I've had, it was my experience at Pennsylvania Railway Station that struck with me. Now I teach my players to have respect for other people and their possessions. Being a member of a team is a totally shared experience. If one person steals, it destroys trust and hurts everyone. I can put up with many things, but not with the people who steals. If one of my players was caught stealing, he’d be gone.

Whether you are on a sports team. in an office or a member of a family, if you can't trust one another, there's going to be trouble.

What can be inferred about the baggage boys?

A.They could earn much, but they must work hard.

B.Many of them earned their money in a dishonest way.

C.They were all from poor families.

D.They were all thin, young boys.
