How much does our language influence the way we think? How deeply do language and culture
interpenetrate and influence one another? These questions about language have fascinated thinkers throughout the ages. For example, Johann Gottfried Herder and Wilhelm von Humboldt in the German Romantic tradition regarded language as a prisma or grid spread over things in the world so that each language reflects a different worldview. Write a short essay to explain your position on this view.

听力原文:W: Alexander, you speak quite good English. How did you learn a foreign language
so well? You know English is really a headache for me. I just don't know how to learn it well.

M: Well, when learning a foreign language, I would surround myself in the language, the target language, that I wanted to learn.

W: Surround oneself in the language? I think it is difficult to do that. Can you explain how you do it?

M: Uh, for example, I would watch a movie in that language, uh, which would help me keep motivated to learn vocabulary and phrases.

W: That sounds interesting.

M: Yeah, you'll have a lot of fun by doing so.

W: I see. A little hit of practice every day is very important to language learning.

M: Yes. Regular practice is also better than practicing a lot in one day. Learning a language well needs patience and perseverance.

W: Then what else did you do to learn a foreign language?

M: Well, I would keep a situational notebook.

W: What is that used for?

M: Ur, for example, in a restaurant, you use a certain phrase over and over again, and so if you can remember just one particular phrase in each setting, then you can immediately speak that language and have more confidence and you get more out of learning the language, I think.

W: Really? I'll try that. Thank you for your advice.

M: You're welcome.

Passage 3

It’s logical to suppose that things like good labor relations, good working conditions, good wages and benefits and job security motivate workers, but one expert, Fredrick Herzberg argued that such conditions do not motivate workers. They are merely satisfiers. Motivators, in contrast, include things such as having a challenging and interesting job, recognition and responsibility. However, even with the development of computers and robotics, there’re always plenty of boring, repetitive and mechanical jobs and lots of unskilled people who have to do them. So how do mangers motivate people in such jobs? One solution is to give them some responsibilities, not as individuals, but as a part of a team. For example, some supermarkets can buy office stuff to people who fill the shelves, and the people who work at the check out into a team, and let them decide what product lines to stock, how to display them and so on. Many people now talk about the importance of a company’s shared values or culture with which all the staff can identify, for example, being the best hotel chain, or making the best, the most user-friendly or the most reliable products in a particular field. Such values are more likely to motivate workers than financial targets which automatically only concern a few people. Unfortunately, there’s only a limited number of such goals to go around and by definition, not all the competing companies in that industry can seriously plan to be the best.

根据材料回答第 32~35 题。第 32 题 What can actually motivate workers according to Fredrick Herzberg?

When companies do business overseas, they come in contact with people from different cultu
res. These individuals often speak a different language and have their own particular custom and manners. These differences can create problems.

For example, in France, business meetings begin promptly at the designated time and everyone is expected to be there. Foreign business people who are tardy are often left outside to cool their heels as a means of letting them know the importance of promptness. Unless one is aware of such expected behaviors he may end up insulting the people with whom he hopes to establish trade relations.

A second traditional problem is that of monetary conversions. For example, if a transaction is conducted with Russia, payment may be made in rubles. Of course, this currency is of little value to the American firm. It is, therefore, necessary to convert the foreign currency to American dollars. How much are these Russian rubles worth in terms of dollars? This conversion rate is determined by every market, where the currencies of countries are bought and sold. Thus there is an established rate, although it will often fluctuate from day to day. For example, the ruble may be worth '0.75 on Monday and '0.72 on Tuesday because of an announced wheat shortage in Russia. In addition, there is the dilemma associated with converting at '0.72. Some financial institutions may be unwilling to pay this price, feeling that the ruble will sink much lower over the next week. As a result, conversion may finally come at '0.69. These "losses" must be accepted by the company as one of the costs of doing business overseas.

A third unique problem is trade barriers. For one reason or another, all countries impose trade barriers on certain goods crossing their borders. Some trade barriers are directly related to exports. For example, the United States permits strategic military material to be shipped abroad only after government permission has been obtained. Most trade barriers, however, are designed to restrict import. Two of the most common import barriers are quotas and tariffs.

The best title for the passage would be ______.

A.How to Succeed in International Trade

B.Monetary Conversion

C.Trade Barriers

D.Unique Problems in International Trade

The biggest mistake a workplace leader can make with office culture is failing to devise one at all. How do you know if your office culture is helping, or hurting, your employees, and as a result your bottom line? Designing a thoughtful(周到的)office culture is so important for a new company. Here are some aspects where a leader should be careful not to make mistakes. A cohesive (和谐一致的) office culture starts at the top and is built with intention. Strict dress code or early start time may seem like an easy way to build professionalism (职业化)in your workplace, but is there a good reason for it? Strict requirements that work in a law office may erode the work ethic at a hip tech startup. Make sure to back up your rules with reason. For example, at Culture Studio, a T -shirt design and printing company, you’d better believe there’s no place for ties. Employees are encouraged to dress down in their brand’s merchandise or their competitors’ Leadership shouldn’t abandon culture development there. Good employees tend to be goaloriented over-achievers, so put your budget on that with team -building activities, contests, and incentives for the best. Think critically about the ideal employees for your team, what makes the tick, and how you can support them, within and outside of their role in the company’s goals.

Setting the tone for your workplace starts with each hire and at every level in the company. In science the meaning of the word "explain" suffers with civilization's every step in sea
rch of reality. Science cannot really explain electricity, magnetism, and gravitation; their effects can be measured and predicted, but of their nature no more is known to the modern scientist than to Thales who first looked into the nature of the electrification of amber, a hard yellowish-brown gum. Most contemporary physicists reject the notion that man can ever discover what these mysterious forces "really" are. Electricity, Bertrand Russell says, "is not a thing, like St. Paul's Cathedral; it is a way in which things behave. When we have told how things behave when they are electrified, and under what circumstances they are electrified, we have told all there is to tell." Until recently scientists would have disapproved of such an idea. Aristotle, for example, whose natural science dominated Western thought for two thousand years, believe that man could arrive at an understanding of reality by reasoning from self-evident principles. He felt, for example, that it is a self-evident principle that everything in the universe has its proper place, hence one can deduce that objects fall to the ground because that's where they belong, and smoke goes up because that's where it belongs. The goal of Aristotelian science was to explain why things happen. Modem science was born when Galileo began trying to explain how things happen and thus originated the method of controlled experiment which now forms the basis of scientific investigation.

The aim of controlled scientific experiments is ______.

A.to explain why things happen

B.to explain how things happen

C.to describe self-evident principles

D.to support Aristotelian science

听力原文: With the introduction of radio, newspaper publishers wondered how broadcasting would affect them. Many feared that radio as a quick and easy means of keeping people informed would displace the newspaper industry altogether.

Others hoped that the brief newscast heard on the air would stimulate listeners in the story so they'd buy the paper to get more information. This second idea turned out to be closer to the truth. Radio and print were not substitutes for each other but actually sup- ported each other. You see the relationship between different media is not always one of displacement but can be one of reinforcement. However this is not always the case. Take television and motion pictures for example, with the popularization of TV, the motion picture industry suffered greatly. Movie attendance dropped when audience members chose to stay at home and be entertained. Likewise, when a football game was shown on the air, the stands were often empty because fans chose to watch the game at home.

(33)

A.The role of the print media.

B.Radio news as a substitute for newspapers.

C.The relationships between different media.

D.Television's effect on the movie industry.
