听力原文: A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading. It is remarkable first for what it contains: the range of news from local crime to international politics, from sport to business and fashion to science, and the range of comment and special features as well, from editorial pages to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books, art, theatre and music.
A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it: never completely, never straight through, but always by jumping from here to them, in and out, glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the next.
A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers, but far more than any one reader is interested in. What brings this variety together in one place is its topicality, its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now. But the immediacy and the speed of production that goes with it mean also that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient value. For all these reasons, no two people really read the same paper: What each person does is to put together out of the pages of that day's paper, his own selection and sequence, his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently, which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need but without wasting time, demands skill and self-awareness as you modify and apply the techniques of reading.
(4)
A.Wide coverage of events.
B.Quick speed of production.
C.Immediacy of reporting.
D.Focus on local events.

听力原文: We are now living in a world in which robots are taking over much of the work.Robots make our cars, fly our planes and work out wages.
But these robots are not mechanical men and women. They do not look like us.They are machines specially built to do some of the things that human beings can.
Although they may not look like us,robots need some human features in order to be able to do human work.First of all they need some kind of brain.Their "brain" is a computer, which has a memory to human member instructions and ability to control other equipment.Another essential feature of many robots is an arm that can do the kind of things that human beings can with their arms.One-armed robots are now coming into widespread use in industry. They are being used, for example,on car assembly lines.
The great advantage of robots over human workers is that they can work non-stop for long periods. They never get tired, and always work with the same accuracy. They can also work in conditions that humans could not bear.Last but not least,as more robots are built, their cost will come down.
Although robots are rapidly taking over many jobs in industry, they seem a long way from taking over in the home. The problem is that it would take a very complex and costly robot to perform. half the tasks involved in housework.
According to the speaker, what can the present-day robots do?
A.Drive cars.
B.Fly planes.
C.Pay wages.
D.Repair machines.

听力原文: A common feature of both insect and human societies is that they consist of individuals living together and behaving as a group. They also resemble each other in that in each society different individuals have different jobs to do. The basic unit of each society is the family, (26) but there is an important difference: with insects the family is the society; with humans, on the other hand, the society consists of a group of families or a group of individuals from different families.
(26) We have noted that in both societies different individuals perform. different functions or roles. Among insects the number of roles is very small. In a termite society, for example, there are four basic roles: the queen, the king, the workers and soldiers. (27) In modern human society, in contrast, there are thousands of different occupations. Furthermore, (28) in human society an individual has a choice of roles, whereas in insect society there is no choice. A queen is born a queen and a worker is born a worker. Nor can an insect change roles. A queen cannot decide to stop laying eggs and become a worker instead. With humans, the opposite is the case, because (29) human roles are always learned whereas insects can only perform. the role they were born to do.
Finally, although there are other distinguishing features, it is important to note that an insect has almost no chance of staying alive if it goes away from its group. A human individual, however, can not only survive outside his own group, but also change from one group to another. He may be happiest if separated from it, or he can change it for another.
Questions:26. What is the main point of the passage?
27.What is the main similarity between insect society and human society?
28.What is the difference between insects and human beings in terms of roles?
29.Why can human roles be changed?

听力原文: This summer the Shakespeare Festival will feature four plays that focus on Roman history, and since we've just finished reading Julius Caesar, I thought you'd be interested in going. The performances should be excellent. Besides our own college actors, there will be actors coming from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and London. The festival has received a grant from the National Endowment for the humanities to support the plays, as well as a series of events to increase the public's appreciation of the plays. One of the events I hope you can go to is a public lecture by our own chair, Dr. Arthur Johnson. That will be two weeks from Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the community room downtown at the public library. Dr. Johnson will first give a brief introduction to the whole series, and then discuss Julius Caesar in detail. Tickets for the whole series are on sale now at the campus box office. The first play will begin two weeks from Friday.
