听力原文:W: It's almost vacation time. Have you found a summer job yet?

M: I suppose I can work at the boy's camp where I worked last summer. But camp jobs don't pay much.

W: I think I can get a job at the Edgewater Hotel. A friend of mine was a waiter there last sum mer. The pay wasn't good, but he got lots of tips.

M: My sister worked there last summer, making beds and cleaning bathrooms. She didn't like it, but she earned quite a lot of money.

W: A friend of my sister's did that one summer.

M: What I want is a job outside. After sitting in college classes all winter, I'd like a job in the open air.

W: The high school kids earn a lot of money every summer cutting grass. My brother is only

fourteen, but he gets five dollars every time he cuts somebody' s grass, and it only takes him an hour. He just rides around on the machine that he bought, and the machine does all the work.

M: That's pretty good. I used to cut grass when I was in high school. But now I thought I might work for a road-building company, or something like that.

W. It would be good experience. You could earn a lot, too.

When did the conversation take place?

A.Before summer vacation,

B.During summer vacation.

C.After summer vacation.

D.In class.

Section B

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.

If, at the end of a conversation somebody says to me, "as soon as I know, I'll ring you up", he is talking too much for granted. He is proposing to attempt the impossible. So I have to say, "I'm afraid you can't. You see. I'm not on the telephone. I just haven't got a telephone."

Why don't you have a telephone? Not because I pretend to be wise or pose as unusual. There are two chief reasons: because I don't really like the telephone I find I can still work and play, eat, breathe and sleep without it. Why don't I like the telephone? Because I think it is a pest and a time-waster. It may create unnecessary suspense and anxiety, as when you wait for an expected call that doesn't come; or irritating delay, as when you keep ringing a number that is always engaged. As for speaking in a public telephone box, which seems to me really horrible. You would not use it unless you were in a hurry, and because you are in a hurry you will find other people waiting before you. When you do get into the box, you are half asphyxiated by stale, unventilated air, flavored with cheap face-powder and chain-smoking; and by the time you have begun your conversation your back is chilled by the cold look of somebody who is fidgeting to take your place.

If you have a telephone in your own house, you will admit that it tends to ring when you least want it to ring; when you are asleep, or in the middle of a meal or a conversation, or when you are just going out, or when you are in your bath. Are you strong-minded enough to ignore it, to say to yourself, "Ah, well, it will all be the same in a hundred years' time. You are not. You think there may be some important news or message for you. Have you never rushed dripping from the bath, or chewing from the table, or dazed from the bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number?

Suppose you ignore the telephone when it rings, and suppose that, for once, somebody has an important message for you. I can assure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later. Think of the proverb: "ill news travels apace." I must say good news seems to travel just as fast. And think of the saying: "the truth will out." It will.

The write does not like telephone in a public telephone box, because ______.

A.unventilated air

B.it is far from his home

C.it is not convenient

D.he must pay for it

听力原文:M: When do you want to leave for that seaside town, Martha?

W: I'm not sure yet, but maybe we should leave on Friday after work. It's a long drive, but I'd rather get there late Friday than midday Saturday. We have three days off this time, after all.

M: How long is it?

W: Five or six hours.

M: So you leave at 4:30 right after work and you will be there around 9:00 or 10:00?

W: I suppose so. And we could still have a good night's sleep.

M: What are you going to take?

W: Mostly shorts and T-shirts.

M: You don't think it's going to be a bit cold at night at the seaside?

W: Maybe. I'm going to take a sweater or a light coat--just in case.

M: Hope you have a good time there.

What is the woman going to do?

A.Attend a party.

B.Take a holiday.

C.Go on a business trip.

When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in basic training in New Jersey and not sure i
f I could make it home for the holiday. Only on the afternoon of December 23 was the list if men who would have three-day posted. I was one of the lucky soldiers.

It was Christmas Eve when I arrived, and a light snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see beyond her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood. There were lights, all colors, shining against the green of a pine.

"Where did it come from?" I asked.

"I asked the gate boy to cut it ," my mother said, "I wouldn't have one just for myself, but when called--oh, such a rush ! He just brought it in this afternoon." Krysal Star was in its place. A few green branches reached about a little disorderly at the side, I thought, and there was a bit of bare trunk showing in the middle. But the tree filled the room with warm light and the whole house with the pleasant smell of Christmas.

"It's not like the one you used to find," my mother went on, "Yours were always in good shape. I suppose the gate boy didn't know where to look . But I couldn't be critical."

"Don’t worry," I told him, "It’s perfect."

It wasn't of course, but at the moment I realized for the first time: all Christmas tree are perfect.

From the passage we can infer that ______.

A.the writer spent his first Christmas during the war

B.all the soldiers did not go home for Christmas during the war

C.all the soldiers had three-day passes

D.the writer did not want to go home for Christmas at first

听力原文:W: Excuse me, is that seat taken?

M: No, it's free, I think.

W: Right, I'll take it. Here I am. I thought I'd never make it.

M: What, catching the plane?

W: Yes, my brother insisted on driving out to the airport. The traffic was terrible, there being an accident or something.

M: I always travel on the airport bus. I know you waste a certain amount of time waiting around doing nothing. But at least you're certain that you'll be on time for the plane.

W: You're right. Better late than never. But of course, better never late. I try to make it at exactly 11 o'clock. That's when our flight is supposed to take off.

M: See they are starting to check on the seat belts. I suppose it won't be long now.

W: The take-off is the only interesting thing about flight, in my opinion.

M: Well, I don't know. Landing can have its moment especially when the weather is bad.

W: Oh, that reminds me. The weather report this morning said sunny and warm. I don't see any clouds. So we'11 be fine.

Where are the speakers?

A.On a plane.

B.On an airport bus.

C.In the waiting room.

听力原文:Man: When did you last go to London?

Woman: Oh, I don't know really. I suppose it was about thirty, or maybe even forty years ago.

Man: As long as that? You wouldn't recognize it now.

Woman: Has it changed very much?

Man: Oh, yes! It's changed beyond belief. It's a lot bigger of course and it's been cleaned up quite a lot.

Woman: What about the fog?

Man: Oh, London doesn't have fog any more. That's all disappeared and the air has been cleaned considerably over the last thirty years or so.

Woman: Do you think I'd still recognize it?

Man: Of course you would. Parts of London haven't changed very much at all, but in other areas the change is incredible.

Woman: Is that cinema still open, the one at the comer of the street where I used to live? You remember it, the "Rex", I think.

Man: No, that was knocked down about ten years ago. It's been replaced by a large supermarket. The small park has been destroyed, too, and the road has been widened.

Woman: What a pity! That park used to be very beautiful, and peaceful, too, in the summer.

Man: Even the old grocery shop isn't there any more. It's been turned into a small restaurant.

Woman: Is the mall still there who used to deliver coal?

Man: No, unfortunately, he died five years ago, but his son still runs the business. He's doing very well with the business.

Woman: Well, that's progress! You know, I don't think I'd like to go back to London somehow.

Man: I go to London more often now than I used to, so I don't notice the changes now.

Woman: I think it's been changed too much. I want to remember it as it was.

(20)

A.It's bigger.

B.It's cleaner.

C.It doesn't have fog any more.

D.It's more industrialized.

听力原文:M: Good evening and welcome to "Hardlife", the program that talks to ordinary peo
ple about their jobs. Today's guest is Barbara Currie, who's a dentist. Welcome, Barbara.

W: Thank you.

M: I suppose I should start by asking you how you became interested in dentistry.

W: Well, I suppose it started when I was eight. I smashed my front tooth and the dentist put in a gold one, which I thought was wonderful. I had it until I was 17.

M: And you've been a dentist for ten years or so?

W: Fifteen now.

M: Would you say that dentistry is still a man's world? I mean, I can't remember ever having a woman dentist in my life.

W: Well, it used to be a totally male profession. It's getting better, but you still find only a few women who own their own practices. Most of them are junior partners or employees in a man's business.

M: In your experience, is it common for people to be frightened of the dentist?

W: Yes, that's common. Some people are even frightened of coming into the room. I have to go through a long process of getting them to come in, walk around, sit down and then leave.

M: You mean you don't actually do any work on their teeth?

W: That's right. Sometimes, if people are scared, the first thing is simply helping them to feel a bit more comfortable with the place. M: Would you say you enjoyed your work?

W: Yes, I think so on the whole. But I'm still not used to some of the horrors I see when people open their mouths, and bad breath is not pleasant to deal with. Another thing that I find difficult is the noise of the drill. But laser treatment is now doing a lot of work we had to use the drill for, so now it's not so much of a problem.

(29)

A.She smashed her front tooth in her childhood and the dentist put in a beautiful one.

B.Her childhood experience was so horrible that she made up her mind to help those with bad teeth.

C.She liked to be dentist without any particular reasons.

D.She fell in love with a dentist.

听力原文:M: Hi, Miss Rowling. How old were you when you started to write, and what was you
r first book?

W: I wrote my first finished story when I was about 6. It was about a small animal, a rabbit I mean, and I've been writing ever since.

M: Why did you choose to be an author?

W: If someone asked me how to achieve happiness, step one would be finding out what you love doing most and step two would be finding' someone to pay you to do it. I consider myself very lucky indeed to be able to support myself by writing.

M: Do you have any plans to write books for adults?

W: My first two novels were for adults. I suppose I might write another one, but I never really imagine a target audience when I'm writing. The ideas come first, so it really depends on the idea that grabs me next!

M: Where did the ideas for the Harry Potter books come from?

W: I've no idea where ideas come from and I hope I never find out, it would spoil my excitement if it turned out I just have a funny little wrinkle on the surface of my brain which makes me think about invisible train platforms.

M: How do you come up with the names of your characters?

W: I invented some of the names in the Harry books, but I also collect strange names. I've gotten them from medieval saints, maps, dictionaries, plants, war memorials, and people I've met!

M: Oh, you are really resourceful.

What do we learn from the conversation about Miss Rowling's first book?

A.It was about a little animal.

B.It took her six years to write.

C.It was adapted from a fairy tale.

D.It was about a little girl and her pet.
