Many people are worried about what television has done to the generation of American child
ren who have grown up watching it. For one thing, recent studies show that TV weakens the ability to imagine. Some teachers feel that television has taken away the child's ability to form. mental pictures in his own mind, resulting in children who cannot understand a simple story without pictures. Secondly, too much TV too early usually causes children to be removed from real-life experiences. Thus, they grow up to be passive watchers who can only respond to action, but not start doing something actively. The third area for such a worrying situation is the serious dissatisfaction frequently expressed by school teachers that children show a low patience for the pains in learning. Because they have been used to seeing results of all problems in 30 or 60 minutes on TV, they are quickly discouraged by any activity that promises less than immediate satisfaction. But perhaps the most serious result is the TV effect of bloody fights and death on children, who have come to believe that it is an everyday thing. Not only does this increase their admission of terrible acts on others, but some children will follow anti-social acts that they see on television.

Because of TV, children have lost their ability to ______.

A.read story books

B.understand pictures in books

C.have ideas of new things

D.think in a clear way

Boxing was long viewed sickly. Generally forbidden by law in earlier days, the fighting wa
s usually done with bare fists, and matches often lasted forty or fifty rounds.

In 1882 John L. Sullivan, a fighter of great power, won the world heavyweight championship from Paddy Ryan in a bare fisted battle marked by hitting, scratching, and biting without any rule. Five years later, while fighting Patsy Cardiff at Minneapolis, Sullivan broke his right arm in the third round, but he continued fighting to the sixth round and won.

In1889, Sullivan defeated Jade Kilrain with his bare fists in another championship fight, winning twenty thousand dollars and a diamond prize medal. His admirers talked then of running him for the next governor, but he traveled to Australia for a boxing tour instead, coming back only to lose his title in a twenty-one-round match with a young Californian named James J. Corbett.

"Gentleman James" victory in this match marked a turning point; for it showed scientific boxing was over strength. But Corbett's title ended in 1897, when another boxer, Bob Fitzsimmons, in less than three seconds, achieved his feats and then Fitzsimmons knocked out an Irishman, won the heavyweight championship of the world, and invented the terrible "solar plexus punch".

Boxing matches in the early days were______.

A.short and bloody

B.usually spare-time competitions

C.governed by strict rules

D.cruel

听力原文: The Civil War came about as a result of many differences between the North and the South. The differences had their beginnings in the early 1800s. Tensions continued to grow for several decades. When the war began in 1861, most American believed the conflict would not last long. Instead, it stretched into four years of bloody fight. In the end, more Americans died in the Civil War than in any war the nation had fought.

The disagreements between the North and the South centered on the following five issues: slavery, tariffs, taxes, political power in the House of Representative, and political power in the Senate. People in the North had strong feelings about each of these issues. So did the people in the South. Each side had reasons for the way it felt.

Many people in the North did not believe in slavery. They thought the people of the South should not own slaves. Although some southerners opposed slavery, most felt they needed slaves to raise cotton and tobacco, which were the pillar economy. On the other hand, the North' s economy was based on manufacturing industry not plantation agriculture. The northern ers opposed slavery in the South since they had not enough people to work in their factories and wanted to get human resources. In the end the North won the war and the Union was saved.

(30)

A.In the early 1800s.

B.Several decades after its break.

C.In 1861.

D.In 1865.
