听力原文: A new study suggests that very young children who watch a lot of television may have attention problems later in school.

Children with attention problems cannot sit still or control their actions. They talk too much, lose things, forget easily and are not able to finish tasks.

The new study tested the idea that television watching by very young children is linked to attention problems by the age of seven. It involved more than 1,300 children. There were two groups of children, aged one and three. Researchers asked the parents how often the children watched television. The parents also described their children's actions at the age of seven using a method that can tell if someone suffers from attention problems.

The children who watched a lot of television at an early age were most likely to have attention problems. Every hour of watching television increased the chances of having attention problems by about ten percent. For example, children who watched three hours a day were thirty percent more likely to have attention problems than those who watched no television.

One of the researchers said there are other reasons why children should not watch television. Earlier studies have linked it with children becoming too fat and too aggressive. Other experts say the new study is important, but more work needs to be done to confirm the findings and better explain the cause and effect.

(30)

A.Attention problems.

B.Participating problems.

C.Communication problems.

D.Speaking problems.

听力原文: New research from Australia shows that pets are good for your health. The findings of this new study suggest that people who have pets are at less risk from heart disease than those who do not.

The new research was carried out over three years and examined 3,000 people. They took tests that measured a variety of different factors known to be involved in heart disease--blood pressure and blood levels. Also, people were asked about their lifestyles. The 800 people who owned pets had low levels on each of the factors measured than those who did not own pets. The study 'also showed that it did not matter what kind of pet was owned--a cat was as good as a dog— so the benefits could not be attributed to the exercises involved in walking a dog.

The question is just how pets manage to make their owners more healthy. The obvious answer is that they make their owners feel more relaxed and happy. The Australian scientists who organized this study commented that if a new drug was available that was as effective as simply having a pet, then this drug would undoubtedly be considered a breakthrough in the control of heart disease.

(30)

A.Pets manage to make their owners more healthy.

B.Pets spread many kinds of disease to men.

C.Pet owners enjoy better health because of exercises.

D.Pets can sometimes cause high blood pressure in man.

听力原文: A new international study shows that six people die every minute from smoking. This study shocked most people because it means 3 million deaths around the world every year. If the present rate of smoking continues, the number of deaths each year from smoking could rise to 10 million by the year 2050. This news has worried the most people in the developed countries, especially those smokers.

The study also shows that smoking is the main cause of the death in industrial countries, and most of the smoking deaths have happened to men, especially in developing countries. That means more people smoke in the poor areas than in the rich areas and more people died in the poor countries than in the wealthy countries.

In addition, the study indicates that smoking may also cause lung cancer to those adults. It may lead to cancer of the mouth and other parts of body. Smokers are more likely than nonsmokers to suffer from heart disease. Therefore, experts advise the people to stop smoking completely so that they can reduce their chance of dying early.

(30)

A.3 million smokers increase every year.

B.3 million people get lung cancer every year.

C.3 million cigarettes ate produced every year.

D.3 million people die from smoking every year.

听力原文: A new study reports the common drug aspirin greatly reduces life-threatening problems after an operation to replace blocked blood vessels to the heart. More than 800,000 people around the world have this heart surgery each year. The doctors who carried out the study say giving aspirin to patients soon after the operation could save thousands of lives. People usually take aspirin to control pain, and reduce high body temperature. Doctors also advise some people to take aspirin to help prevent heart attacks. About 10% ~ 15% of these heart operations end in death or damage to the heart or other organs. The new study shows that even a small amount of aspirin reduced such threats. The doctors said the chance of death for patients who took aspirin would fall by 67 %. They claimed this was true if the aspirin was given within 48 hours of the operation. The doctors believe aspirin helps heart surgery patients because it can prevent blood from thickening, and blood vessels from being blocked. However, the doctors warned that people who have stomach bleeding or other bad reactions from aspirin should not take it after heart surgery.

(30)

A.It has been proven to be. the best pain-killer.

B.It is a possible cure for heart disease.

C.It can help lower high body temperature effectively.

D.It reduces the chance of death for heart surgery patients.

听力原文: What is the shape of the universe? The question has baffled and obsessed humankind since civilization first gazed up towards the heavens. The world has yet to receive a satisfactory explanation. Now a new study hints at a possible answer. Contrary to the traditional interpretation, the study suggests the universe is finite and bears a rough resemblance to a soccer ball, or to put it more accurately, the universe looks like a 12-sided volume bounded by pentagons. Based on the new theory, a model has been made to help illustrate the alleged shape of the Universe. If proven by further evidence and inspection, the model would represent a major discovery about the nature of the cosmos.

"What makes the discovery exciting now is it's not a matter of idle speculation," said Jeffrey Weeks, a US mathematician, "There's real data to look at and there's the great possibility of getting a definite answer." Weeks has announced hints that the Universe is actually relatively small, with a hall-of-mirrors illusion which tricks us into thinking that the space stretches on forever.

While studying cosmic background radiation observed by NASA's Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, Jeffrey Weeks, together with a team of French cosmologists, arrived at this new discovery. It is still in question whether the theory is correct. However, the idea itself is indeed appealing and inspiring.

(26)

A.A new discovery in Mathematics.

B.A new program conducted by NASA.

C.A new theory on the shape of the universe.

D.A new planet detected in space.

听力原文: A study recently concluded that the public in industrialized nations are becoming more interested than before in helping the less fortunate people of developing nations. This newfound selflessness has not resulted in personal giving of money, but rather in individual efforts to give aid through service— which is far more important than money. Most volunteers have been professionals. Doctors and nurses have volunteered for medical duty, engineers for building roads and bridges, and teachers and others have made themselves available for a variety of international assignments.

It is not clear why this phenomenon is taking place. There has been consideration that international developments in recent years have weakened nationalism and have emphasized importance of all humanity working together for a better world.

(36)

A.A couple's experience as volunteers.

B.The need for volunteers in the Third World.

C.A new public emphasis on volunteering.

听力原文: Dr. Williams in New York carried out a study of cats, which had fallen out of windows of apartment blocks. Nine out of ten survived a fall of two storeys or more. One cat fell from a flat on the thirty- second floor and only lost a tooth. Interestingly, the cats were most at risk from injury or death if they fell from the seventh floor. Falling from either a lesser or greater height gave them a better chance of survival.

What is the significance of the seventh floor? The study shows that this is the distance cats take to reach their terminal speed, i.e., the final speed that does not change once it is reached. After the seventh floor, it may be that they relax and spread out their legs like a flying squirrel. This would slow them down and allow their muscles to absorb more of the force of impact, which would reduce the damage.

Cats also have a very well-developed sense of balance. They can change position while falling so that they land on their feet. This has the advantage of spreading the force of impact with the ground over four legs and so does less damage to each leg.

(33)

A.Nine out of ten.

B.One third.

C.Elven out of thirty.

D.One fourth.

听力原文: A British study of how diet affects the health of new mothers and their babies produced the surprise finding that vegetarian women are more likely to have girls, one of the report's authors said yesterday.

In what is thought to be the first study of its kind, researchers at Nottingham University in central England found significant differences in the sex of babies born to vegetarian and meat and fish-eating women. They were examining the health conditions in vegetarian and non-vegetarian mothers, looking at things like hemoglobin levels, which show how much iron the mother has in her blood, and birth weights.

Altogether 5,942 pregnant women were involved in the study when they were booked in Nottingham's City Hospital during 2001. According to the researchers, vegetarian mothers were defined as pregnant women who avoided meat and fish. Nearly five percent were vegetarian among them, a total of more than 250 women.

The birth ratio in Britain is that for every 106 boys born there are 100 girls, that's pretty constant. In their sample group of vegetarians there were 81.5 boys born for every 100 girls.

To further test their surprise findings, they increased the sample number to what scientists called a "statistically significant" level. The study was extended for a further six months so that the sex of more babies could be looked at. The results, covering around 150 more vegetarian women, were" just about exactly the same".

The study also found that vegetarian mothers were less likely to smoke during pregnancy -- 10 percent did so, compared with 20 percent of meat-eaters.

(36)

A.Vegetarian women are more likely to have girls.

B.Non-vegetarian women are more likely to have girls.

C.Vegetarian women are more likely to have boys.

D.Vegetarian women are more likely to smoke during pregnancy.
