听力原文: Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to some of our laws.

The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 18 years old, nor may your friends buy it for you.

Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don't make unnecessary noise, particularly at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.

Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful since the traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use the crossings for walking and do not take any chances when crossing the road.

My next point is about litter. It's against the law to throw away waste materials in a public place. When you have something to throw away, please put it in. your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.

Finally, as to smoking, it is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 16 years old.

I'd like to finish by saying that if you need any sort of help or assistance, you could get in touch with your local police station. Now, are there any questions?

How many laws are there discussed in the speech?

A.Three.

B.Four.

C.Five.

Whenever advertisers want you to stop thinking about the product and to start thinking abo
ut something bigger, better, or more attractive than the product, they use that very popular word "like". The word "like" is the advertiser’s equivalent of the magician’s use of misdirection. "Like" gets you to ignore the product and concentrate on the claim the advertiser is making about it. "For skin like peaches and cream" claims the ad for a skin cream. What is this ad really claiming? It doesn’t say this cream will give you peaches-and-cream skin. There is no verb in this claim, so it doesn’t even mention using the product. How is skin ever like "peaches and cream" ? Remember, ads must be read exactly according to the dictionary definition of words. This ad is making absolutely no promise for this skin cream. If you think this cream will give you soft, smooth, and youthful-looking skin, you are the one who has read the meaning into the ad.

The wine that claims "It’s like taking a trip to France" wants you to think about a romantic evening in Paris as you walk along the street after a wonderful meal in an intimate cart. Of course, you don’t really believe that a wine can take you to France, but the goal of the ad is to get you to think pleasant, romantic thoughts about France and not about how the wine tastes or how expensive it may be. That little word "like" has taken you away from crushed grapes into a world of your own imaginative making. Who knows, maybe the next time you buy wine, you'll think those pleasant thoughts when you see this brand of wine, and you'll buy it.

How about the most famous "like" claim of all, "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should"? Ignoring the grammatical error here, you might want to know what this claim is saying. Whether a cigarette tastes good or bad is a subjective judgment because what tastes good to one per son may well taste horrible to another. There are many people who say that all cigarettes taste terrible, other people who say only some cigarettes taste all right, and still others who say all cigarettes taste good.

The word "like" in an ad often focuses the consumer’s attention on ______.

A.what the advertiser says about the product

B.what magic the product really possesses

C.why the advertiser promotes the product

D.why the product is as good as promised

Living in Brazil (巴西)and Switzerland

Moving to a different city may seem difficult. You have to change schools and get used to your new home. But you can always go back to that city to visit. When you move to another country, things are different. However, difficult as it may be, the experience can be rewarding.

My dad, a Brazilian, is really funny and can make friends quickly. My mom, a Swiss, is usually quiet and a bit shy. She likes to be organized, But my dad never makes plans. She enjoys staying home, but my dad always wants to go out. Swiss and Brazilian一what a mix!

After my parents got married, they moved to Switzerland. There they had my brother and me. When I was two, we moved to Brazil. During my childhood we visited Switzerland every year.

Many people ask me where I prefer to live: Brazil or Switzerland. It's really hard to answer because I love both countries. Brazil is a big country with many states and people. There are multiple dialects and many types of foods. People here have beautiful smiles and are always happy, even if they are poor. In the south the climate is cool, but in the north It's hot and humid.

Switzerland, on the other hand, is small but beautiful and clean. There are four languages in that tiny country. People there are very different from Brazilians: they are wealthy, independent, and organized. The food is delicious, and of course, the famous Swiss chocolate is great, and the climate is dry and cool.

I love both countries. In Switzerland, it's pleasant, calm, and peaceful everywhere. I enjoyed my stay there very much. But now I am happy here in Brazil. I feel excited and at home.

第7题

When Benjamin Franklin observed that nothing is certain in this world but death and taxes,
he might well have added "and work." Not that work really belongs in such dark company, however; it can and should be a good deal more pleasant than Mr. Franldin's two certainties. Working in a pleasant atmosphere, occupying the right post -- in short, finding the right job -- is an important part, perhaps the most important, of every man's life.

The first thing to do in seeking a position is to determine exactly what you want to do -- not in terms of some vague, ethereal (轻飘的) objective, such as "I, want to become a member of the management group," but with a definite and immediate goal. Through everyone's experience there must run a thread of consistency, a pattern of what the individual has enjoyed doing and hence has done well. Though actual jobs may have been held in different fields of endeavor, each one of us should be able to pick out the type of work he can do best.

Many men I have interviewed have come to me and said: "I am a financial man. Any sport you have in the treasurer's or controller's line, I'd like." or "I'm good with people. I can sell anything. If you hear of a sales manager's opening or public relations spot, I'd be a natural".

These men are confused. They have not thought through the problems and responsibilities of the fields they say they are qualified for. It is also apparent to the interviewer that they are thinking of themselves rather than of the contribution they can make to the future employer.

This does not imply that one man is not capable of filling several different kinds of positions. A man's aptitude or his past training may fit him for a number of job, but he should know enough not to confuse sales management with public relations or a treasurer's duties with those of a controller. (Personally I believe many companies set such rigid specifications .in looking for a man that they overlook worthwhile candidates.) But after all, if an individual cannot decide for himself what he can do best, how can he expect anyone else to do it for him?

The author seems to ______.

A.disagree with Franklin on death and taxes as the only two certainties

B.agree with Franklin on death and taxes as the only two certainties

C.think that there is no certainties but work in this world

D.think that work is as dark as death and taxes

In the desert world, the seasons differ from one region to another. The Gohi ,which lies r
oughly between 35℃ and 55℃ north of the equator, is a good example of seasonal change.

Four seasons are characteristic of the Gobi: spring, summer, fall, and winter, with usually a false spring at the end of winter. These seasons are distinct, with extremes of temperature, as much as 150 between the hottest day in summer and the coldest day in winter.

Spring in the Gobi usually begins about the second week April. For 2 or 3 weeks there is a period of delightful weather, with warm, sunny days and not too much wind. But these are the days of false spring. About the first of May, the tail end of winter returns, and cold, blustery days of dustburdened winds are the rule then, until early or middle June. The latter part of June, for 2 or 3 weeks after the blowy end of winter is the real spring. It spreads its rather comfortable warmth over the desert, and occasional light rains help the desert grass to come along nicely.

July, or sometimes mid-June to mid-August is summer. Hot days are the rule, but the nights are cool. Wind and dust again govern the desert, but this is the season when hard rains, if they come at all, are most likely to dump water on the plains.

Fall usually may be recognized by the encouraging, bright days beginning in mid-August and lasting until mid-September or the first of October. This is the time of year when both men and beasts feel best in the Gobi. The clear air, bright sun, and frosty temperatures make you glad to be alive.

Winter comes with a rush anytime after the middle of September. One day you may be enjoying a pleasant temperature near the eighties. But suddenly the air cools. In a few hours the temperature has slipped below 50; and a little later cold rain changes to snow and blustering wind.

In this passage the author briefly describes ______.

A.the different seasonal changes

B.the effects of climatic change on msn and beasts

C.the Gobi as a terrible place to live in

D.the seasonal cycle of the Gobi
