lems. It says ninny more are suffering from lack of sleep.

A group of sleep research organizations asked the Institute of Medicine to study the problem. The institute is part of America's National Academy of Sciences. The study examined why we need sleep, the effects of sleep loss and other sleep dimmers. A fourteen-member committee carried out the study. Researchers involved in the study axe suggesting a number of steps to help prevent sleep disorders. They suggest a campaign to inform. the public about the problem. They want increased education and training among health care workers. And they are calling for new technology to identify and care sleep problems.

(30)

听力原文: Most people think that the older you get, the harder it is to learn, a new language. That is, they believe that children can learn more easily and efficiently than adults. Thus, at some point in our lives, maybe around age 12 or 13, we lose the ability to learn languages well. Is this idea a fact or myth?

Is it true that children can learn a foreign language more efficiently than adults? On the contrary, research studies suggest that the opposite may be true. One report, on 2,000 Danish children studying Swedish, concluded that the teenagers learned more in less time than the younger children. Another report on Americans learning Russian showed a direct improvement of ability over the age range tested; that is, the ability to learn increased as the age increased, from childhood to adulthood.

There are several possible explanations for these findings. First, adults know more about the world and therefore are able to understand meanings more easily than children. Moreover, adults can use logical thinking to help themselves see patterns in the language. Finally, adults have more self-control than children.

(30)

A.Teenagers are more efficient in learning.

B.Children learn languages more easily than adults.

C.Adults are more logical than children.

D.The ability to learn languages increases with age.

听力原文: A disturbing report appeared recently in the magazine Science. The report describes an experiment, the results of which suggest that there are occasions when psychiatrists, doctors trained in the treatment of mental illnesses, have great difficulty in distinguishing between people who are mentally ill and those who are mentally healthy.

In the experiment, eight perfectly normal people pretended to have mental disorders and received psychiatric treatment in a number of different hospitals. The eight false patients included several trained doctors, who lied about their occupation. They also lied about their names and naturally about their symptoms. But in all other respects they told the truth concerning their lives and their personal relationships; and once they had been admitted to hospital they behaved quite normally.

However, as soon as they had been officially labeled "mentally ill", everything they did tended to con firm the diagnosis in the eyes of the medical staff. For if instance, if one of the "patients" approached a doctor and asked a perfectly sensible question such as "Pardon me doctor, could you tell me when I will be allowed to use the tennis courts?" The doctor's normal response was "to walk straight on, ignoring the question".

The eight false patients stayed in the mental institutions for periods of from 7 to 52 days. They are forced to the frightening conclusion that once a person has disappeared behind the walls of a mental institution, it may prove extremely difficult to convince the medical authorities that he or she is not in fact mentally ill.

(30)

A.They were the subjects in a medical experiment.

B.They wanted to distinguish between people who are mentally iii and healthy.

C.They wanted to find out what happened to patients at mental institutions.

D.They were psychiatrists who experimented With new methods of treatment.

听力原文: China has come up with a first nationwide regulations on managing alcohol sales, including a ban on selling alcohol to minors, China Youth Daily reports.

The "Alcohol Circulation Management Regulations" enacted Thursday by the nation's Ministry of Commerce are set to get into effect January 1, 2006.

The regulations set up systems to supervise alcohol sellers, and include a registration and tracing system.

The new rules also demand that trade administration departments at all government levels cannot block or undermine the legal circulation of alcohol products. This is being widely viewed as an effort by the central government to restrain protectionism in regional trade.

The report did not say how those who don't obey the new regulations would be punished.

The action follows a recent trend in some major urban areas. In March of this year, the Shanghai local government carried out a rule banning the sale of alcohol to minors, the Xinhua news agency said.

According to that regulation, selling cigarettes and alcohol to minors is banned.

Adults cannot help minors buy such products, nor are they permitted to smoke in school classrooms, libraries or any location where children are frequently present. All stores selling cigarettes and alcohol are required to post "No Cigarette and Alcohol Sales to Minor" warning signs.

(36)

A.Children education.

B.Alcohol sales.

C.Environmental protection.

D.None of the above.

听力原文:The World Health Organization says 57 nations in southern Africa and Southeast As
ia are facing a serious shortage of health care workers. This crisis is affecting how governments fight diseases and improve health. The W. H. O says more than 4 million additional doctors, nurses and other health workers are urgently needed to improve the situation.

The warning came in a new W. H.O. report released on April 7th--World Health Day. The report says the health cam crisis is most severe in southern Africa. The continent has 11 percent of the world's population, but only 3 percent of the world's health care workers. W. H.O. official Timothy Evans says part of the problem is caused by rich nations that offer high-paying jobs to doctors and nurses from poor countries. In addition, Mister Evans says few trained health care professionals are working where they are needed most. These in poor countries usually work in cities instead of farming areas.

The W. H.O. report provides a ten-year plan to deal with the crisis. It calls for national leadership and new policies for health workers. It also urges more international assistance and foreign aid. The report says that nations facing the most serious shortages must increase health care spending and use public money for health care effectively.

What is the passage mainly about?

(30)

A.The influence of WHO on governments.

B.The warning of the coming diseases.

C.The international cooperation in health improvement.

D.The shortage of health care workers.
