Bananas

There are so many aspects to this strange and wonderful fruit. Even its shape is a bit mysterious, conjuring images of tropical islands and sun-filled days. Did you know that the word" banana" originates from the Arabic and means finger?

The banana is so popular in America today that four million tons of them are imported every year. One banana has less water, fifty percent more food energy, four times the protein, half the fat, twice the carbohydrate, almost three times the phosphorus, five times the Vitamin C and iron and at least twice the other vitamins and minerals as an apple! The average American eats 33 pounds of bananas a year. An excellent source of potassium and carbohydrates, they can be eaten any time of the day because of their digestive properties. Natural sugar provides energy for those sports requiring endurance and low proportions of sodium chloride are a good recommendation for salt free diets. Eat at least one banana a day, they are said to contain everything a human needs.

That is all quite impressive but where did the banana come from in the first place? Buddhist texts from 600BC mention the banana for the first time in history. Alexander The Great tasted bananas in the Indus Valley in 327BC and in his day they were called "pala". China records the presence of banana plantations as far back as 200AD. In 650AD Islamic conquerors brought bananas back to Palestine and through trade spread them all over Africa. Wild forms of the banana plant come originally from the Indo-Malaysian area and are now cultivated all over the tropical and sub-tropical continents. They were unknown to the New World until 1516 when Spanish missionary, Father Tomas de Berlanger, brought the first plants there.

How do they grow? The whole matter is extremely confusing. The banana tree itself (even though it is not a tree but a giant plant)is by definition a herb. What is a herb? It is a flowering plant with a fleshy, rather than woody, stem. Each stem consists of ten to fourteen hands, each carrying from eighteen to twenty bananas. The stem however is a false one, formed by tightly wrapped overlapping leaves, resembling stalks of celery. The plant belongs to the same family as lilies, orchids and palms and the fruit is a berry. By definition, a berry is a simple fruit having a skin surrounding one or more seeds in a fleshy pulp. A banana cut lengthwise will reveal very tiny black seeds within its center. Therefore, a banana is a fruit, herb, berry and plant all at the same time. Maybe that is where the expression" going bananas" meaning" going crazy" comes as people tried to decide what a banana really was!

There are about four hundred different varieties of this fabulous fruit. At this moment there are five different types of bananas common on the market. Red bananas have a green/red peel and pink fruit flesh. They taste the same as yellow bananas. The redder a fruit, the more carotene it contains. Carotene is commonly found in carrots and thought to be very healthy, although too much will turn your skin orange! Fruit-bananas are the normal, yellow bananas of about 15-30 cm whilst apple-bananas are smaller, 8-10 cm, and ripen faster. They are also yellow. The baby-banana(pisang susa) is yellow as well and measures 6-8 cm. It is the sweetest of the banana family. Finally baking-bananas are large, 30 to 40 cm. and arc green, yellow or red-like. They cannot be eaten raw. They fulfill the role of the potato in the tropical countries.

The three most important brands are Chiquita, Bonita and Fyffe. The Chiquita's production sites are located in Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica and Columbia. The Bonita banana hails from Ecuador and is the cheapest of the three, but only because it is never advertised. Fyffe was founded in 1888 and has the distinction of being the oldest fruit brand in the world. These bananas are produced in Belize,

U. S. Blacks Hard-hit by Cancer

Death rates for cancer are falling for all Americans, but black Americans are still more likely to die of cancer than whites, the American Cancer Society said Monday.<br>

In a special report on cancer and blacks, the organization said blacks are usually diagnosed with cancer later than whites, and they are more likely to die of the disease. This could be because of unequal (不平等的) access to medical care, because blacks are more likely to have other diseases as well, and perhaps because of differences in the biology (生物学) of the cancer itself, the report added.<br>

"In general, black Americans have less hope of surviving five years after diagnosis than whites for all cancer sites and all stages of diagnosis," the report said.<br>

"In describing cancer statistics for black Americans, this report recognizes that many of the differences associated with race may be caused by unfair social and economic differences and unequal access to medical care."<br>

The cancer society said blacks should be encouraged to get check-ups (体格检查) earlier, when cancer is more treatable, and it said more research is needed to see if biological differences play a role.<br>

"The new statistics emphasize the continuing importance of wiping out these unfair social differences through public policy and education efforts," the organization said in a statement.<br>

But it also noted a drop in cancer death rates.<br>

"Cancer death rates in both sexes for all sites combined have dropped greatly among black Americans since 1992, as have incidence rates (发生率) ," said the report.<

Daughter: Ah,no way. That stuff is nasty and warm. Come on,dad。

Dad: Uh,okay. I guess I could make some pancakes.

The Drink Your Body Needs Most<br>

1 Our bodies are estimated to be about 60% to 70% water. Blood is mostly water, and our muscles, lungs, and brain all contain a lot of water. Water is needed to regulate body temperature and to provide the means for nutrients (滋养物) to travel to all our organs. Water also transports oxygen to our cells, removes waste, and protects our joints and organs.<br>

2 We lose water through urination (排尿 ), respiration (呼吸 ), and by sweating. If you are very active, you lose more water than if you do not take much exercise. Symptoms of mild dehydration (脱水) include chronic pains in joints and muscles, lower back pain, headaches, and constipation (便秘). A strong smell to your urine, along with a yellow color indicates that you are not getting enough water. Thirst is all obvious sign of dehydration and in fact, you need water long before you feel thirsty.<br>

3 A good rule of thumb (好的做法) is to take your body weight in pounds and divide that number in half. That gives you the number of ounces (盎司) of water per day that you need.<br>

For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you should drink at least 80 ounces of water per day.<br>

If you exercise you should drink another 8-ounce glass of water for every 20 minutes you are active. If you drink coffee or alcohol, you should add at least an equal amount of water. When you are traveling on an airplane, it is good to have 8 ounces of water for every hour you are on board the plane.<br>

4 It may be difficult to drink enough water on a busy day. Be sure you have water handy at all times by keeping a bottle for water with you when you are working, traveling, or exercising. If you get bored with plain water, add a bit of lemon for a touch of flavor. There are some brands of flavored water available, but some of them have sugar or artificial sweeteners that you don&39;t need.

Approaches to Understanding Intelligences

It pays to be smart, but we are not all smart in the same way. You may be a talented musician, but you might not be a good reader. Each of us is different. Psychologists disagree about what is intelligence and what are talents or personal abilities. Psychologists have two different views on intelligence. Some believe there is one general intelligence. Others believe there are many different intelligences.<br>

Some psychologists say there is one type of intelligence that can be measured with IQ tests.<br>

These psychologists support their view with research that concludes that people who do well on one kind of test for mental ability do well on other tests. They do well on tests using words, numbers or pictures. They do well on individual or group tests, and written or oral tests. Those who do poorly on one test, do the same on all tests.<br>

Studies of the brain show that there is a biological basis for general intelligence. The brain of intelligent people use less energy during problem solving. The brain waves of people with higher intelligence show a quicker reaction. Some researchers conclude that differences in intelligence result from differences in the speed and effectiveness of information processing by the brain.<br>

Howard Gardner, a psychologist at the Harvard School of Education, has four children. He believes that all children are different and shouldn&39;t be tested by one intelligence test. Although Gardner believes general intelligence exists, he doesn&39;t think it tells much about the talents of a person outside of formal schooling. He thinks that the human mind has different intelligences.<br>

These intelligences allow us to solve the kinds of problems we are presented with in life. Each of us has different abilities within these intelligences. Gardner believes that the purpose of school should be to encourage development of all of our intelligences.<br>

Gardner says that his theory is based on biology. For example, when one .part of the brain is injured, other parts of the brain still work. People who cannot talk because of brain damage can still sing. So, there is not just one intelligence to lose. Gardner has identified 8 different kinds of intelligence: linguistic, mathematical, spatial, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, body-kinesthetic(身体动觉的), and naturalistic.

Black Holes

Most scientists agree that black holes exist but are nearly impossible to locate. A black hole in the universe is not a solid object, like a planet, but it is shaped like a sphere (球体). Astronomers(天文学家) think that at the center of a black hole there is a single point in space with infinite (无限的 ) density (稠密 ) . This single point is called a singularity (奇点). If the singularity theory is correct, it means that when a massive star collapses, all the material in it disappears into the singularity. The center of a black hole would not really be a hole at all, but an infinitely dense point.<br>

Anything that crosses the black hole is pulled in by its great gravity.<br>

Although black holes do exist, they are difficult to observe. These are the reasons.<br>

No light or anything else comes out of black holes. As a result, they are invisible to a telescope.<br>

In astronomical terms, black holes are truly. For example, a black hole formed by the collapse of a giant star would have an event horizon (视界) only 18 miles across.<br>

The nearest black holes would be dozens of light years away from Earth. One light year is about 6 trillion (万亿) miles. Even the most powerful telescopes could not pick out an object so small at such a great distance.<br>

In 1994 the Hubble Space Telescope provided evidence that black holes exist. There are still answers to be found, however, so black holes remain one of the mysteries of the universe.<

Black holes are part of space. 查看材料

Why Is the Native Language Learnt So Well

How does it happen that children learn their mother tongue so well? When we compare them with adults learning a foreign language, we often find this interesting fact. A little child without knowledge or experience often succeeds in a complete mastery of the language. A grown-up person with fully developed mental powers, in most cases, may end up with a faulty and inexact command.<br>

What accounts for this difference?<br>

Despite other explanations, the real answer in my opinion lies partly in the child himself, partly in the behavior. of the people around him. In the first place, the time of learning the mother tongue is the most favorable of all, namely, the first years of life. A child hears it spoken from morning till night and, what is more important, always in its genuine form, with the fight pronunciation, right intonation, fight use of words and right structure. He drinks in all the words and expressions, which come to him in a flash, ever-bubbling spring. There is no resistance: there is perfect assimilation.<br>

Then the child has, as it were, private lessons all the year round, while an adult language-student has each week a limited number of hours, which he generally shares with others. The child has another advantage: he hears the language in all possible situations, always accompanied by the right kind of gestures and facial expressions. Here there is nothing unnatural, such as is often found in language lessons in schools, when one talks about ice and snow in June or scorching heat in January.<br>

And what a child hears is generally what immediately interest him. Again and again, when his attempts at speech are successful, his desires are understood and fulfilled.<br>

Finally, though a child&39;s "teachers" may not have been trained in language teaching, their relations with him are always close and personal. They take great pains to make their lessons easy.

Compared with adults learning a foreign language, children learn their native language with ease. 查看材料
