Although the practice of the old Roman religion disappeared many centuries ago, some tra
ces of the Roman gods are still present in our daily vocabulary. The names of the Roman sun god, Sol, and the moon goddess, Luna, are used frequently in our language The word solar describes anything pertaining to the sun, and lunar anything pertaining to the moon. For example, the sun and the planets circling it are called the solar system. The period of time in which the earth circles the sun once is a solar year. The moon takes one lunar month to circle the earth. A lunar year of twelve lunar months is eleven days shorter than a solar year. In some cases our language shows how these heavenly bodies affect us directly. A room or place for sunbathing is often called a solarium. We get our word parasol from the Italian word meaning " a guard against the sun." For many centuries it was believed that the moon affected people who were mentally ill. 听力原文: City traffic is a great problem. More cars are produced every year and the stree
ts are getting more and more crowded. So during" rush hours", when people are going to or from their work, traffic is brought to a standstill. It has been suggested that commuters should share their cars and give each other lifts. It is an excellent idea, however, so far nobody has been able to think of a way to compel people to do so.

To discourage motorists from leaving their cars in the streets all day, parking meters are used. When you park at a meter, you will pay a coin. This pays for a certain amount of time. The meter re cords this and it shows when the time that you have paid for is finished. If the car is still there then, you have to pay a fine.

Traffic wardens look after the meters. They walk around the streets and check that every meter shows that money has been paid for the car parked there. If a meter registers" time expired", the motorist who has left his car there is fined. Of course, the traffic :warden cannot wait for the owner of car to return. He carries a block of printed forms, and on one of these he writes down all the details, such as the registration number of the car, where it is parked, how much the driver must pay and where he must send the money. He leaves this form. on the car where the driver will be able to see it easily; he usually pushes it under one of the windscreen wipers so that it will not blow away. And in case it rains before the motorist returns, the form. is put in a little plastic envelope to protect it. When the driver comes back, he gets an unpleasant surprise, but it is his own fault for leaving his car too long at a parking meter.

What is "rush hours"?

A.A period when cars are rushing on the roads.

B.A period when people are going to or from their work.

C.A period when cars are crowed on the roads.

D.A period when people are crowed in the buses.

听力原文: Good afternoon. My name is Mary Raffety. For the next eleven weeks, I will be yo
ur lab instructor. The lab experiences you will be having are designed to complement your work in Dr Kaplan's inorganic chemistry course. Today's experiment is purposely a short one; it will help you become familiar with the lab setup and equipment.

As your lab instructor, it is my duty to assist you in setting up your experiments and understanding your results. I will also grade your lab notebooks. But I have an even more basic responsibility: your physical safety. I will insist on proper precautions, such as wearing protective goggles at all times. I also expect you to use common sense: don't wear long scarves that might catch fire; don't smoke; don't taste unknown substances.

Let me reinforce this point with a story. Issac Newton, perhaps the greatest scientist of all ages, lived in a period when the toxic effects of chemicals were less understood than today. He routinely sniffed fumes, tasted chemicals, and used open containers for heating substances. In the early 1690s, he suffered through a period of insomnia, depression, and mental instability. Though his biographers linked this situation to problems in his personal life, researchers now think it was a consequence of his lab procedures; they found abnormally high concentrations of lead, mercury, and other heavy metals in preserved specimens of his hair.

Consequently, we must learn from the past and put safety first.

At what point in the semester does this talk take place?

A.At the beginning.

B.In the middle.

C.Near the end.

D.During the final exam.
