I am one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we should preterto live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large city. I have managed to convincemyself that if it weren"t for my job I would immediately head out for the open spaces and go backto nature in some sleepy village buried in the country. But how realistic is the dream？

Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the population live in massive tower blocks，noisy， dirty and impersonal. The sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when youlive fifteen floors up. All you can see from your windows is sky， or other blocks of flats. Childrenbecome aggressive and nervous——cooped up at home all day， with nowhere to play; their mothefeel islated from the rest of the world. Strangely enough， whereas in the past the inhabitants of one street all knew each other， nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don"t even say hello to each other.

Country life， on the other hand， differs i~om this kind of isolated existence in that a sense of community generally binds the inhabitants of small villages together. People have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone to turn to when they need help. But country life has disadvantages too. While it is true that you may be among fiSends in a village， it is also true that you are from the exciting and important events that take place in cities. There"s little possibility of going to a new show or the latest movie. Shopping becomes a major problem， anti for anythingslightly out of the ordinary you have to go on an expedition to the nearest large town. The city dweller who leaves for the country， is often oppressed by a sense of unbearable stillness and quiet.

What， then， is the answer？ The country has the advantage of peace and quiet， but suffers ti"om the disadvantage of being cut off; the city breeds a feeling of isolation， and constant noise batters the senses. But one of its tnain advantages is that you are at the centre of things; and that life doesn"t come to an end at half past nine at night. Some people have found（or rather bought） a compromise between the two: they have expressed their preference for the"quiet life" by leaving the suburbs and moving to villages within commuting distance of large cities. They generally have about as much sensitivity as the plastic flowers they leave behind——they are polluted with strange ideas about change and improvement which they force on to the unwilling original inhabitants of the villages.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the government agency that oversees air travel. They studied the problem of airline delays.

They found eleven major problems and proposed eleven ways to fix them. Some of the problems are caused because different regions of the country do things differently. The regions don't talk to each other enough. Some of them need new computers.

Also, more planes are flying. A strong economy has more people using airplanes to get around. Airplanes are a form. of mass transportation now, like trains and buses were in the past. More planes in the airport cause delays.

The airport in San Francisco is a good example. It is growing fast. Many people go through San Francisco to get to other places around the world.

Ron Wilson of the San Francisco International Airport says, "If you've got 18 flights that all want to take off at 8:00 a. m. and you're on the 18th plane in line, you're going to 'be 40 minutes late."

Weather is another main reason for delays. Weather causes about 70% of delays. Fog or freezing rain can cause delays.

The first thing the FAA wants to do is to take control away from the regions during heavy traffic times and bad weather. A national center would make decisions on things that affect the whole country. The FAA also wants to put more distance between planes in the sky when the weather is bad. This rule could cause even more delays.

The FAA knows that their solutions will not cure the problems with airport delays. But, they hope to make things better. There are just too many planes, too few traffic controllers, and not enough new technology.

A Ride in a Cable-car

A ride in a cable-car is one of the exciting and enjoyable experiences a child can have. In Switzerland， which is the home of the cabie-car， it is used mostly to take tourists up the slope of a mountain， to a restaurant from which one can have a bird-eye view of the surrounding country， or to a top of a ski-run， from which， in winter， skiers glide down the snow covered the slope on skis. In Singapore， however， the cable-car takes one from the summit of a hill on the main island to a low hill on Sentosa， a resort island just off the southern coast.

The cable-car is really a carriage which hangs from a strong steel cable suspended in the air. It moves along the cable with other cars on pulleys， the wheels of which are turned by electric motors. The cars are painted in eye-~catching colours and spaced at regular intervals. Each car can seat up six persons. After the passengers have entered a car， they are locked in from outside by an attendant， they have no control over the movement of the car.

Before long， the passengers get a breath-taking view through the glass windows of the modern city， the bustling harbour， and the several islands off the coast. The car is suspended so high in the air that slips on the sea look like small boats， and boats like toys. On a clear day， both the sky above and the sea below look beautifully blue.

In contrast to the fast-moving traffic on the ground， the cars in the air move in a leisurely manner， allowing passengers more than enough time to take in the scenery during the brief trip to the island of Sentosa. After a few hours on Sentosa， it will be time again to take a cable-car back to Mount Faber. The return journey is no less exciting than the outward trip.
