听力原文: Men usually think the cartoon is funny. Women do not. And there's a good reason for the difference in opinion. We start finding things laughable or not laughable-early in life. And infant first smiles at approximately eight days of age. Many psychologists feel this is his first sign of simple pleasure. At six months or less, the infant laughs to express complex pleasures- such as the sight of Mother's smiling face. Psychiatrist Martin says that the earlier an infant begins to smile and laugh, the more advanced is his development. Studies revealed that children who did not develop these responses "developed some 'disease' in later life, or simply gave up and died."

听力原文:Most young married couples in the United States share their duties and responsibi

听力原文: Most young married couples in the United States share their duties and responsibilities both inside and outside the home. The reason for this is that they both usually have a job. Most of the young married people have to work in order to plan for their future years. For example, some people might plan for a comfortable home, some others may plan for a family and their children's education, and still some others may generally want to save for a better living.

Since a woman helps financially, a man feels that he should help his wife in the home. He may help her with the cleaning by lifting heavy furniture. Also, he may often wash and dry the dinner dishes, because his wife has to take care of the children. This usually surprises people of other cultures, because they consider it beneath the dignity of a man to help his wife, or in other words, a man shouldn't do a woman's job. In American life, however, this is just another way of showing the respect that men and women have for each other.

(30)

A.Because both husband and wife have their own jobs.

B.Because they have a lot to take care of.

C.Because their parents don't usually help.

D.Because they have more than one kid to bring up.

听力原文: Marriage often is not easy. Love often is not easy. Sometimes friendship between a man and a woman is not easy. Maybe a man and a woman love or like each other, but they argue. They get angry. Later they apologize (say "I'm sorry"), but it happens again and again. What's the problem? Are men and women really very different?

Deborah tannen says yes. Men and women are very different. Tannen teaches at Georgetown University. She writes books about the ways people talk. She believes that men and women talk—and think—in different ways. She tells about some differences in her book You Just Don't Understand.

The differences, Tannen says, begin when men and women are children. Very young boys and girls are similar to each other. In other words, they like the same things and play in the same ways. They aren't very different. But then there is a change. When children in the United States are five or six years old, boys usually play in large groups. One boy gives orders. For example, he says, "Take this," "Go over there," and "Be on this team." He is the leader. Boys also brag. In other words, they say good things about themselves. To have a high position in the group is important to boys.

Girls in the United States usually play in small groups or with one other girl. A girl's "best friend" is important to her. Girls don't often give orders; they give suggestions. For example, they say, "let's go over there," "Maybe we should do this," and "Do you want to play with that?" Girls don't usually have a leader, and they don't often brag. Everyone has an equal position.

(33)

A.Life is not easy.

B.Marriage often is not easy.

C.Love often is not easy.

D.Sometimes friendship between a man and a woman is not easy.

听力原文: The family is changing. In the past, grandparents, parents, and children used to live together, and they had an extended family. Sometimes two or more brothers with their wives and children were part of this large family group. But family structure is changing throughout the world. The nuclear family consists of only one father, one mother, and children. It is becoming the main family structure everywhere.

The nuclear family offers women some advantages: they have freedom from their relatives, and the husband does not have all the power of the family. Studies show that in nuclear families, men and women usually make an equal number of decisions about family life.

But wives usually have to "pay" for the benefits of freedom and power. When women lived in extended families, sisters, grandparents, and aunts helped one another with housework and childcare. In addition, older women in a large family group had important position. Wives in nuclear families do not often enjoy this benefit, and they have another disadvantage, too; women generally live longer than their husbands, so older women from nuclear families often have to live alone.

Studies show that women are generally less satisfied with marriage than men are. In the past, men worked outside the home and women worked inside. Housework and childcare were a full-time job, and there was no time for anything else. Now women work outside and have more freedom than they did in the past, but they still have to do most of the housework. Women actually have two full-time jobs, and they have not much free time.

Questions:

17. Who used to live together in an extended family?

18. What advantages does the nuclear family offer women?

19. What is another disadvantage of the nuclear family for women?

20. Many women are dissatisfied with marriage and the nuclear family because they______.

(17)

B.Brothers with their wives.

C.Many relatives.

听力原文: Researching friendship, psychologist Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their sex,the results were completely clear. Women have more friendships than men,and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is“marked and unmistakable”.

More than two-thirds of the single men,Rubin interviewed, could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person,or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress. “Most women. ”says Rubin,“identified at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn to in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives. ”

“In general,”Rubin writes in her new book,“women's friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men's relationships are marked by shared activities. ”“Even when a man is said to be a best friend,”Rubin writes,“the two share little about their innermost feelings. Whereas a woman's closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave fl failing marriage,it wasn't unusual to hear a man say he didn't know his friend's marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa. ”

(33)

A.Men spend more nights in their friends'home than women.

B.Women are much more talkative than men.

听力原文: Social life in America varies tremendously from office to office. Big corporations may have dubs, sports teams, trips, dance classes, or other employee activities which you can join or not as you like, while small companies usually can' t afford these activities.

In general, people go to lunch with each other by invitation when they fed like it. Usually people of higher ranks would invite those of lower ranks rather than the other way around, but lines are not closely drawn. Except for special occasions, everyone pays for himself or herself regardless of whether or not an invitation is offered.

It is quite acceptable for men and women colleagues, single or married, to go out together for lunch. This may be the extent to which your office friends will invite you. Although in general Americans readily take people home with them, they often do not want to mix business and social life. If this is the case in your place of work, you will have to seek your friendships through other channels.

(30)

A.Employees in big corporations enjoy more activities.

B.Employees in small companies enjoy more activities.

C.Employees in big corporations make more friends.

D.Employees in small companies go lunch together more often.

听力原文: After years of study, I hove determined there are only two types of people in this world: Those who get to the airport early and those who walk in just as the plane is about to take off. If there were any justice in the world, the early airport people would be rewarded for doing the right thing and the late airport people would be punished. But there is no justice. I know I hove been an early airport person for years. My luggage will get on the plane first but it will be the last luggage to come off the plane when we land. You know who really gets his luggage first when we land? The late airport person, who rushes into the airport three minutes before the plane takes off. "But if I get there real early," I told myself, "I will get the best seat." Well, no matter how early I showed up, I was always told that someone had called two or three days ahead of me and asked for that seat. The utmost embarrassment of the early airport person happened to me a few years ago when I was flying from New York to Chicago, When I got to the ticket counter, the person there said, "Sir, you hove a seat on the 9:15 A.M. flight, is that right?" "Yea. ' I said. "Well, it's only 7:00 A. M. and the 7:05 A.M. flight has not left yet. If you hurry you can make it." I was too embarrassed to say that I arrived early so I wouldn't have to hurry. Instead, I ran down the corridor to the plane.

B.He is quick in making decisions.

C.He is always the first to arrive at the airport.
