M: What? Just let me finish these books and I'll be right there.
W: Would you mind coming right away, please? It's the washing machine. It's making a funny noise. I want you to listen to it. I'm worried.
M: Oh, no. Not again. (In the kitchen now. )It's the pump, that's what it is.
W: I can't hear you. Let me turn the machine off!
M: The pump isn't working properly. So what do you want me to do about it?
W: What do I want you to do about it? Repair it, of course. You don't think I made you leave your work for nothing, do you?
M: But I'm not a mechanic. Why don't you ring the shop where we bought the thing? Ask them to repair it!
W: Are you sure that's what you want me to do?
M: Of course, I'm sure! Why do you ask?
W: Because the last time they came you got very angry.
M: Did I?
W: Yes. It was a small question of money. Don't you remember? The men were only here for half an hour but they still charged two pounds for an hour's work. You didn't like that at all.
M: Oh? Hmm...yes, I remember now.
Why is the woman worried about the washing machine?
A.It doesn't work at all.
B.It's making a funny noise.
C.It can wash the clothes well.
D.It needs repairing again.

Section B
Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.
If, at the end of a conversation somebody says to me, "as soon as I know, I'll ring you up", he is talking too much for granted. He is proposing to attempt the impossible. So I have to say, "I'm afraid you can't. You see. I'm not on the telephone. I just haven't got a telephone."
Why don't you have a telephone? Not because I pretend to be wise or pose as unusual. There are two chief reasons: because I don't really like the telephone I find I can still work and play, eat, breathe and sleep without it. Why don't I like the telephone? Because I think it is a pest and a time-waster. It may create unnecessary suspense and anxiety, as when you wait for an expected call that doesn't come; or irritating delay, as when you keep ringing a number that is always engaged. As for speaking in a public telephone box, which seems to me really horrible. You would not use it unless you were in a hurry, and because you are in a hurry you will find other people waiting before you. When you do get into the box, you are half asphyxiated by stale, unventilated air, flavored with cheap face-powder and chain-smoking; and by the time you have begun your conversation your back is chilled by the cold look of somebody who is fidgeting to take your place.
If you have a telephone in your own house, you will admit that it tends to ring when you least want it to ring; when you are asleep, or in the middle of a meal or a conversation, or when you are just going out, or when you are in your bath. Are you strong-minded enough to ignore it, to say to yourself, "Ah, well, it will all be the same in a hundred years' time. You are not. You think there may be some important news or message for you. Have you never rushed dripping from the bath, or chewing from the table, or dazed from the bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number?
Suppose you ignore the telephone when it rings, and suppose that, for once, somebody has an important message for you. I can assure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later. Think of the proverb: "ill news travels apace." I must say good news seems to travel just as fast. And think of the saying: "the truth will out." It will.
The write does not like telephone in a public telephone box, because ______.
A.unventilated air
B.it is far from his home
C.it is not convenient
D.he must pay for it

W: Fine.
M: How do you feel about your work in your first full year in the company?
W: Well, the job is exactly as it was advertised in the paper, so there have been no surprises. I like dealing with customers and 1 don't mind answering the phones and preparing invoices. Sometimes it's a bit boring to type long price lists, but someone has to do it.
M: That's true. Does anything make your job difficult?
W: The computer. To begin with, I was slow because I didn't know the program, but now I get annoyed when the computer just stops working for no reason. I think the computers are too old for our software and we need some new machines.
M: Is there anything else you would like to change?
W: Let me see. I'd like the manager to issue credit notes without having to ask you first. You're often away on business and sometimes customers ring up with a complaint. And if we can't contact you, then we can't deal with the complaint properly.
M: Yes, but some of our customers always find something wrong and try to get a credit note with every order. You can't believe everything they say. What about your objectives for the future?
W: Well, I need to get to know the customers better and try to make fewer mistakes. But I think the most important thing is to broaden my product knowledge, so I can help when customers make enquiries.
M: Don't worry, you'll learn all that in time.
