听力原文: Forests are of great importance to our environment because they can absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. They may also provide shelter and food for many different types of plants and animals. Trees are cut down for many reasons but the main reasons are to make space to build new houses and to clear land to grow grass for cows and sheep to eat, to produce dairy foods. The trees being cut down are sold and are made into paper and furniture.

Cutting down trees may have serious effects to the environment. (33)If animals' homes, which are built in and around the trees, are destroyed, many species in the world will become extinct. For example, many different types of animals in South America had disappeared before scientists could learn about them. Cutting down trees also affects the climate. When rain falls on a forest, new clouds will be created. If huge areas of trees are cut down, clouds can not form, rain does not fall and the land becomes drier and drier and finally becomes deserts. (34)And what's more, the carbon dioxide builds up and adds to the global warming which is making the earth become hotter and hotter.

(35)In recent years, to protect the forests, many European countries are planting trees faster than they are cutting them down. Many trees were planted a few years ago to replace woodland and to create forests in areas where there wasn't much wood. We can also help to save forests by reusing and recycling paper.

(34)

A.The loss of natural habitat for many species.

B.Less space for building new homes.

C.Less carbon dioxide and oxygen.

D.Reduced supply of paper and wood.

Forests have always been useful and important to man who make use of them in many ways. Ev
ery day trees are serving man everywhere. Trees supply man with fruits and building materials in the form. of wood. Without trees it would be impossible to build houses, boats, bridges and so on. Furniture such as desks, chairs and beds is made of wood. Trees can stop man from terrible heat. They're also useful in preventing good and rich top soil from being washed away during heavy rains.

If there were no trees, heavy rains would wash away the rich top soil that is so important to plants. The result is that the land will become a desert. There are plenty of desert areas in the world. A long time ago these desert areas used to be very rich areas, but man in the past had not enough knowledge about science of nature, they cut down too many trees in the area where they lived and never planted new ones. By and by the rich top soil was blown and washed away by strong winds and heavy rains. In the end the rich land changed into useless deserts where nothing could grow.

According to the passage, ______.

A.a long time ago, man did not know how to make use of wood

B.trees are not as useful as they were in the past

C.trees were more found in the past than they are today

D.people have 'always found trees useful

Joachim's vision is based on an idea called pleaching (编织), where tree branches
are grown so that they naturally weave together. Since the growth patterns of trees are __1__ by wind and sunlight, it may be possible to control the way a tree develops.

These Fabricated Tree House Habitats would use trees grown into shapes as housing. One of the __2__ of these designs is that trees would not have to be cut down for lumber.

"A 100 percent treehouse would take years to create," Joachim said.__3__ the climate, a house could take anywhere from 5 to 30 years to grow. Fortunately, there's a way to speed up the process. Joachim suggests including ecological materials such as sod (草皮), grasses and living branches in the housing designs. "This material would be able to move as the house grows," Joachim said.

A home would become an actual ecosystem, a community of plants, animals, and bacteria working together. The trees would also give off water vapor that would assist in __4__ the homes. Solar panels and wind would help provide energy. The tree homes might even have soil pockets, where plants could grow from the structure itself.

Work has already begun on Joachim's first design—a house made from 50 percent recycled and 50 percent living things. Joachim is confident about the __5__ of his work, as he uses natural products without destroying nature.

"The environment and its study are very important. We need to respect nature, don't take it for granted," he said.

听力原文: Christmas is the time when Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus. Every year in December we celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ.. That is why we call this time 'Christmas' -- we celebrate the 'Mass', or church service, for Christ.

Christmas is a truly magical season, bringing families and friends together to share the much loved customs and traditions which have been around for centuries. Most people are on holiday in England and stay at home with their family on Christmas day. Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December in England, with a Christmas dinner for the whole family. During the weeks before Christmas Day, we send cards, watch nativity plays and go to carol services. We also decorate our homes and churches with green leaves, Christmas trees, paper decorations and colourful electric lights.

Christmas Customs and traditions in England, are gradually being lost. Christmas has also become commercialised and the old meaning of Christmas is too often forgotten.

Nowadays, Christmas is celebrated all over the world in many countries, including China, where it is becoming more and more popular.

W: Hello, Alan, how are you?

M: I'm fine, where are you going?

W: Oh, I'm on my way home from work.

M: I didn't know you had a job.

W: Yeah. I got a part-time job at the supermarket.

M: What do you do there?

W: I work in the produce section, cleaning and wrapping fresh fruits and vegetables. Sometimes when it really gets busy, I work at the check-out counter. Have you got a job, Alan?

M: Yeah, I do yard work for people. You know, cutting grass, pruning trees, planting flowers, things like that.

W: I'd like doing that. It must be nice to work outdoors.

M: Sometimes it is, except when it rains, snows or gets too hot or too cold.

W: I guess every job has its drawbacks. There are times when I get pretty tired of carrying things around at my job. A job is a job. Got to earn money for school.

M: Me too, tuition sure is high, isn't it? Well, I'd better go now I have to plant some trees for my neighbors this afternoon.

M: You too. it was great seeing you. Clare.

听力原文: Christmas is America's most popular holiday. Some people attend church and observe Christmas as the birthday of Christ. For others Christmas is just a day of fun and celebration, a time for family and friends to get together, exchange gifts and enjoy a huge holiday dinner. During the last days of November American homes and stores begin to be decorated with Christmas trees and bright lights. Schools and churches prepare special holiday concerts. People go to parties, buy fine gifts and prepare special Christmas food.

Some people criticize Christmas. They say it is not religious enough. They say the holiday has become such big business that Americans forget it was created to honor the birth of Christ. It is true that people spend a lot of money during the holiday season. Store owners expect to get from 60 to 70 percent of their yearly earnings during the month before Christmas.

Defenders of Christmas, however, point out that Americans also do many special things to help each other at Christmas time. One international organization assists more than two and one half million people in the United States each Christmas. The organization gives out toys, warm clothing, food and many other kinds of aid.

(30)

A.At the end of November.

B.In the middle of November.

C.At the beginning of December.

D.In the middle of December..

听力原文: Not only farmers but also scientists have studied weather forecasting. People for many centuries and in all countries have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecast. Sometimes distant objects such as hills and tall trees seem to be very clear and near. This is a sign of much water in the air, and therefore rain will probably come. When distant sounds, such as noise from a train, birds singing, people shouting, are very clearly heard, then wet and stormy weather is on the way. This is because probably the insects, which they are hunting, then fly low. (31)If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will clear up and become fine. Such rainbows always come in the evening. If the stars twinkle-clearly at night, then fair weather will continue. If a mist appears in the early morning, just about sunrise, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in color, then the following day will be fine. When big clouds disappear at sunset, then the weather will follow on the next day. (32)If a rainbow appears in the morning, then rainy weather will probably come.
