听力原文: Major cultural differences in selling techniques include the relationship between the salesman and the customer. As an expert advises his colleagues, "In many foreign countries, personal relationships are more important than company regulations and products. Developing relationships takes time, but it is decisive to the selling process."

International trade fairs have become extremely important places for conducting business, yet very few domestic sales organizations understand how to take advantage of the opportunities that these shows present. Unlike U.S. trade shows, at which there is an open display of one's goods and services and a lot of looking but not buying, a European trade show is relatively closed and only open to those who are there to conduct business.

In some societies, the first thing people care about is quality; in other societies, the first thing on a customer's mind is the cost; and in other countries, the concern is style. The color, size, and quantity of items need to be considered in packaging any product. The color blue is for funerals in some countries, smaller items are preferred over large items, and the number of items in a package can be critical. For example, a golf ball company packaged their golf balls in groups of four and then sent 50,000 units to their Asian distributor who promptly sent them all back, advising the company to package the golf balls again in packages of three. In many of the countries where the golf balls were to be sent, the number four was considered as being equal to death whereas the number three is the symbol of long life.

(30)

A.Get down to business first.

B.Develop relationships.

C.Call each potential customer.

D.Hold trade fairs.

Over twenty have more than one hundred thousand members. Unions do not exist only to demand high wages. They also educate their members. They provide benefits for the sick and try to improve working conditions. Trade unionists say that we must thank the unions for the great improvement in working conditions in the last hundred years. It is now against the law fur union members to go on strike without the support of their union. This kind of strike la called the unofficial strike and was common until recently. Employers felt that unofficial strikes were most harmful because they could not be predicted. 听力原文: The United States operates under a federal system of government. Under the federal system, power is divided between the central government and the states. The central government is given specific powers. These powers are named in the Constitution. Powers that are not assigned to the central government in the Constitution belong to the states.

The central government can pass laws that affect trade between states. The central government can also make treaties with foreign countries. It has the power to print money. The Constitution gives the central government these powers. These powers belong to the central government only. However, the states have many powers that the central government cannot control. 听力原文: To find out how the name Canada came about we must go back to the 16th century. At that time the French dreamed of discovering and controlling more land, of expanding trade beyond their borders and of spreading their faith across the world. In 1535, Francois I, King of France, ordered a navigator named Jacques Cartier to explore the New World and search for a passage to India.

Cartier first arrived at the Gulf of the St. Lawrence, which he wanted to explore. He did not know what to expect but he hoped that this Gulf was just an arm of the ocean between two islands, if it was, be would soon be on his way to the Far East. So he sailed upstream along the St. Lawrence River. However, instead of reaching Asia he arrived at Quebec or Stadacona, as the Indians called it. It was at this point that the term "Canada" entered the country's history. Apparently the word "Canada" came from an Indian word Kanata, which means community or village. Cartier first used it when he referred to Stadacona or Quebec. What a huge village Canada is!

(33)

A.To build a new country.

B.To explore the New World.

C.To get in touch with the American Indians.

D.To know more about France.

听力原文: Everyone remembers the reign of Elizabeth. She gave her name to an age, which remains in English minds as an age of glory. Most people associated it with two things. The first is literature, especially the literature of Shakespeare, for this was the age when Shakespeare lived and when English literature greatly developed. The second is adventure on the sea. For the first time, English ships began to explore the world and trade with distant countries. They soon came into conflict with the might of Spain, whose huge ships had been sailing across the sea for a hundred years and who had established a rich empire in the Americas. Spain was the greatest enemy to England at the time. Sea fights between Spanish and English ships were frequent, and the English proved to be more aggressive and more successful. Their greatest sailor was Sir Francis Drake, who led the English ships to fight against the great Spanish fleet, "the Armada", when they began to attack the heart of England. "The Armada" was defeated by the English ship. It was a lucky victory in many ways, but it marked the beginning of England as a great power at sea.

(33)

A.Her name and her rule over the country.

B.The great writer, Shakespeare and her name.

C.literature and adventure on the sea.

D.Shakespeare and English literature at the time.
