W: Look, I'm not upset that you couldn't keep the appointment, but it is common courtesy to call. You know that.
M: Yes, I do.
W: During registration I have to see all my students, and sometimes they have to wait several days to get in. When someone doesn't show and doesn't call, that deprives someone else of an appointment time.
M: You're right. I apologize. I didn't feel well, and I guess I just wasn't thinking straight at the time.
W: Okay. Apology accepted. Now, I suppose you need to set up another appointment.
M: Yes, I do. Can you see me now if I wait?
W: No. I can see you at three o' clock this afternoon, or during my office hour on Tuesday or Thursday.
M: Great, Your office hour is best. That's two o'clock, right ?

W: You don't mean the Barbara Johnson who directed the choir that performed on campus last weekend?
M: That's right.
W: But she's so famous. How did you get to meet her?
M: Well, you know how in that program they handed out, they printed the words to the choral pieces a long with the translations. I found all these mistakes in the Latin text, you know typographic... Wait a minute. You were actually reading the words.
W: I like to follow the text while I'm listening. It helps me understand what they are singing about. Any way, while they were doing those Latin pieces.
M: I notice all these mistakes, mostly spelling errors. It was really annoying. So after the concert all those people were crowding around back stage to see her and the soloist...
W: Yeah, I remember there were dozens of people waiting there for autographs.
M: Well, I waited to the end, and then when I met Barbara Johnson I showed her the mistakes I'd found.
W: Was she upset?
M: Upset? She actually thanked me and said if I sent her a copy of the corrected text, she would revise it for the next time they sing those pieces and even print my name in the acknowledgement as a pro gram editor.
W: Wow, your Latin must be pretty good to find all those errors.
M: I should hope so. I major in classics, you know.

听力原文: All right! Enough cookies, cola, and chips! It seems that junk food is all that the children want to eat these days.Television controls their tastes. The kids see well-known personalities eating potato chips, candy, and other processed food, and they want to be like their heroes. How do they do it? They eat the same food. I wish there were more characters like old Popeye the sailor, who ate spinach and not French fries.
Just because I like brown rice, beans, and fresh vegetables, I don't expect my children to cat this "health food." I'm glad to cook traditional meals of meat and potato for them. I really can't be too upset with the kids because most adults aren't careful about what they eat. The other night, my wife and I went to a party where there was plenty to drink but very little for us to eat. They served hot dogs and hamburgers. I can't eat hot dogs, with all those preservatives, and hamburgers are filled with chemicals so that they look good. Besides the meat, they had sugar filled cookies and cake, and, of course, chips. Terrible! I don't want the world to change because of me, but I think that people should realize that there are alternatives to eating meat. They always tell me that I probably don't get my essential proteins. But I feel better than ever and I'm sure that it's because I'm vegetarian. I would really like to see more television advertisements which show the benefits of good, healthy, natural food.

B.Cookies.
C.French fries.

第8题
M: What do you mean?
W: Well, they have to be very careful not to offend people -- especially parents with young kids who might buy a CD that contained violent content or used strong language.
M: How can that be avoided?
W: Well, don't you remember when that woman -- some senator's wife, I think, made a fuss over this issue? It's not really a law, but music companies are now encouraged to put a warning label on albums that describe violence or use strong language.
M: I don't understand. Doesn't that reduce the musician's freedom of speech?
W: Not really. Musicians still have a right to free speech, but the message on the label says, "Buyer, be careful: if you get upset by violence and ugly language, don't buy this album." You agree with that, don't you?
M: I don't know. I still think the whole thing is funny and unreasonable. Musicians should have the right to say what they want to say without having to have a warning label put on their music, I mean, who gets to decide what is considered offensive and what isn't, we don't need a sticker to tell us what to do!
(20)
A.Record companies should pay attention not to offend people.
B.Record companies should be very careful with their employees.
C.People should be very careful with their new CDs.
D.Parents should forbid children to buy new CDs.
第9题
B: Yes. They made him stop working after 50 years at sea. He's pretty upset about it, but what can you do? He has to accept that.
A: He's all alone, isn't he?
B: Yes. His wife's been dead for years. They had one daughter, Doris, but she went off to town as soon as she left school, and he hasn't heard from her since. I hear she's making good money as a model.
A: Maybe someone should get in touch with her, get her to come back for a bit to help?
B: I don't suppose she'd come. She never got on with her father. He's a bit of a tough character, and she's as selfish as before. Oh, I expect old Jake will get by. He's healthy at least, comes into the clinic for a check regularly.
A: Are you his doctor?
B: No. My colleague, Dr. Thomas is.
A: That bad-tempered old man?
B: Oh, no. Dr. Thomas is not really bad-tempered. He just looks like it. He's an excellent doctor. He teaches me a lot. And he has a very nice family--his wife invites me over there to supper every week, very pleasant.
A: I know his daughter, a bit careless but bright and popular with her age-group.
B: I like that little girl, too.
