Musicals, which developed out of British comedy (喜剧) at the end of 19th century, are stage productions that use popular-style. songs and dialogues. They put together music and play, as well as song and dance.

In Europe, the US and Japan, the musical is a popular form. of performing art. Musicals generally attract more people than do plays or classical(古典的) music concerts. However, most Chinese people are still not familiar with this form. of art.

In 1987, the American musical "The Music Man", a heart-warming story about a traveling salesman who tries to trick a small town into buying musical instruments(乐器), was introduced in China. In 1990, "Sunrise" was put on stage in Shanghai. It is considered the first Chinese musical in China's history. But neither of these achieved as great a success as had been expected. This makes it clear that in China, musicals are still at their earliest stage of development.

By comparison, developed in many western countries for years, musicals have achieved great success on Broadway (in New York City) as well as in London's West End, both of which are famous for their musicals. The musical has become an important form. of art in these countries.

What do we know about musicals in many western countries?

A.They are not taken as a form. of art.

B.They are not as popular as concerts.

C.They are used to teach performing art.

D.They are highly enjoyed and welcomed.

听力原文: New York City is the largest city in the United States. Unlike most American cities, which make up only a part of a particular county, New York City is made up of five separate counties, which are called boroughs. They are Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island.

Manhattan, or New York County, is the smallest of the five boroughs, covering an area of 59.5 sq km (23 sq mi). It is the glittering heart of the metropolis. It is the site of virtually all of the hundreds of skyscrapers that are the symbol of the city. Among the more famous of these are the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and Citicorp Center. The 110-story twin towers of the World Trade Center were also among New York's famous skyscrapers until they were destroyed in a terrorist attack in 2001.

Manhattan is the center of New York's cultural life. Numerous stage and motion picture theaters are located around Broadway in Midtown, which includes Times Square. The borough is the home of prominent music and dance organizations, such as the New York City Opera Company, the Metropolitan Opera Association, American Bailer Theatre, and the New York City Ballet.

In 1945, the United States Congress invited the United Nations to establish its permanent headquarters in the United States. Completed in 1952, the UN complex sits in Manhattan, alongside the East River, in the city of New York.

Can ballet change Lives? ____Last night I was worried, very worried

Can ballet change Lives?

21.____Last night I was worried, very worried. I had the job of going to watch amateur ballet dancers performing on stage with one of the UK's top professional ballet companies. A performance like this seemed very risky and! asked myself, 'Are they mad?'Before I tell you the answer,I'll tell you why I had such big doubts.

22.____The idea of mixing amateur and professional dancers started a couple of years ago when two friends with very different jobs found a way of working together. One of the men had created an award-winning TV series. Musicality ,in which amateurs trained to perform. in the musical Chicago. The other man runs a charity called Youth at Risk which works with young people who have serious problems with aggression and antisocial behaviour. Although it was a risk, the two men thought they could make a TV programme in which ballet changed the lives of young people with problems.

23.____Their idea was this: if the young people could accept the strict discipline and challenge of ballet training,it would build their self-esteem and give them new confidence in themselves. The first step was to find suitable teenagers to take part and they asked teachers and youth workers already working professionally with young people at risk, to find candidates for the project. Through them 300 young people joined the programme and although about half dropped out,in the end sixty teenagers appeared on stage in the public performance.

24.____The ballet they chose was Sergei Prokofie's Romeo and Juliet ,choreographed by Sir Kenneth MacMillan. The story of Romeo and Juliet includes family conflict, the generation gap ,gangs, murder ,young love and teenage suicide so it is the perfect mirror for the lives of troubled young people in today's society.

25.____Going back to my original question: 'Are they mad?' The answer is definitely ‘no’. As soon as the ballet started, my worries disappeared. It was amazing how these unlikely dancers were magically transformed into their characters. At the end of the evening I was left with this thought: 'ballet can change lives'. It is a dancing cure, not a talking cure; it is silent so it stops arguments.

A. Why I love going to the ballet

B. Where the idea came from

C. Why I was worried

D. Romeo and Juliet is the perfect choice

E. A new star is born in Chicago

F. How they found the young people

G. My final thoughts

H. A dancer's life

听力原文: No one knows exactly why we sleep. But scientists have learned a lot about how we sleep. From sleep experiments, scientists have learned that there are four different stages of sleep.

When you first fall asleep, your heart starts to beat more slowly and your breathing slows down. If something wakes you, you might not think that you had been asleep. Some people call this kind of sleep dozing. Scientists call it Stage One sleep. Next, if you are not awakened, you drift into a deeper sleep. Your pulse and breathing become even slower than they were during Stage One sleep. But you can still be awakened quite easily. If you take a cat nap, you probably will not get any further than this stage of sleep, which is called Stage Two.

If you sleep longer than about twenty minutes, you go into the third stage of sleep. Your body is very relaxed. It would take a loud noise to wake you up.

You have probably heard of people who walk in their sleep. No one knows what makes people sleepwalk. But a person can sleepwalk only during Stage Four. This is the deepest kind of sleep. If someone wakes you up during stage four, you might feel very confused. It might take you a few minutes to get used to being awake.

.

M: Why? Sorry, Helen. I'm afraid I know little more than you do.

W: Well, it's just that we've been thinking of taking the family to Spain this summer and at this rather late stage we're trying to organize ourselves a suitable hotel. But I thought that you'd been to the Costa Brava.

M: It's absolutely late. But have you looked at the ads?

W: Yeah. As a matter of fact I was reading one ad just this morning in the Daily paper which sounded terrific..

M: For a hotel?

W: Yes. Just outside Barcelona. It said that this hotel was right on the beach, and that's essential as far as we have concerned..

M: I know just how it is.

W: And all the rooms have balconies facing the sea and overlooking the beach.

M: Expensive?

W: No. That was the amazing thing about it. But I'm not sure how much exaggeration there is in the ad.

M: The only way to find out for certain is to go and try it. And that's taking rather a risk.

W: Yes, I agree with you.
