Wells took some of the gas, and his friend pulled out one of Well's teeth. Wells felt no pain at all.
As he didn't know enough about laughing gas, he gave a man less gas than he should have. The man cried out with pain when his tooth was being pulled out.

听力原文: Billy grabbed his fishing rod from the closet and headed for the back door. As he went out the door, he called to his grandmother that he would be back soon. When he reached the river, he put bait on his hook and threw the line into the water. Billy didn't have any friends so he always went fishing with his grandfather. They always did the housework together first and then went fishing.
Sometimes Grandmother would pack their lunches and they would stay all afternoon. After his grandfather died, he felt lonely and very sad. He had a hard time believing that his best friend wouldn't be with him anymore.
After Billy's grandfather died he also had to do extra housework. He tried to spend time with his grandmother so that she wouldn't feel so alone. He could tell that she missed him because she cried a lot and it hurt Billy to see her cry. He kept himself busy so that he wouldn't feel so sad, but as hard as he tired, he couldn't help missing his grandfather.
Billy suddenly saw that his red was moving, he must have caught a fish! The fish on the end of the line swam wildly in the water, but Billy fought with it until finally he had the fish on the bank. It was a large trout and Grandmother would be glad to have it for dinner.
He showed her the fish and she smiled as she took it into the house to clean it. That night after he had gone to bed, Billy looked through his window at the stars and felt that his grandfather was watching over him. One bright star stood alone and seemed to twinkle brightly. Billy looked at it for a moment before he said, "Goodnight Grandfather," and went to sleep.

听力原文: Why de people smoke? One reason is that people become dependent on cigarettes. The substance which people cannot resist in cigarettes is nicotine. When people smoke the nicotine goes directly into the blood stream and makes people feel relaxed. A smoker's body gets accustomed to the nicotine and if he stops smoking he feels nervous. Many smokers try to stop smoking but because of their dependence on nicotine they feel so uncomfortable that they often find it too hard to stop.
Another reason is that people simply enjoy smoking and what it symbolizes. Having a cigarette for many people means taking a break. For some people smoking becomes part of certain social forms, for example, the cigarette after dinner. Many people enjoy smoking because it makes their hands busy.
Many people also like the taste of tar in cigarettes. However, it is the tar that causes cancer. While governments and health experts have tried to make people give up smoking entirely, cigarette manufacturers have to keep selling them by producing cigarettes with less tar. Many people in western countries have welcomed these cigarettes since they find it difficult to stop smoking but want to reduce its risk.
Why are so many people dependent on cigarette?
A.Because they like the taste of tar.
B.Because smoking makes them feel relaxed.
C.Because smoking is funny.
D.Because smoking cures disease.

"Now we' re more than halfway; only two miles away from the tavern, "said the driver.
"I' m glad of that ! "answered the stranger, in a sympathetic mood. He wanted to say more but the east wind blew clear down a man' s throat if he tried to speak. The girl' s voice was something quite charming, however, and at present he spoke again.
"You don' t feel the cold so much at 20 below zero out in the Western Country. There' s none of this damp chill, " he said, and then it seemed as though he had blamed the uncomplaining young driver. She had not even said that it was an awful day, and he began to be conscious of a warm hopefulness of spirit, and sense of pleasant adventure under all the woollen shawls.
"You' ll have a cold drive going back, " he said in earnest, and put up his hand for the thirtieth time to see if his coat-collar were as colse to the back of his neck as possible. He had wished a dozen times for the warm old hunting rig in which he had many a day confronted the worst of
weather in the Northwest.
"I shall not have to go back!" exclaimed the girl, with eager pleasantness. "I' m on my way home now. I drove over early just to meet you at the train. We had word that someone was coming to the tavern. "
How far was the drive from the train to the tavern?
A.One mile.
B.Two miles.
C.A little over four miles.
D.Less than four miles.
