The greatest change has been in the lives of women. During the twentieth century there h
as been a remarkable shortening of the time of woman's life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman's youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty years and is likely to take paid work until retirement, at sixty. Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened by modem living conditions.

This important change in women's life pattern has only recently begun to have its full effect on women's economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first chance, and most of them took a full time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen. Many girls stay at school after that age, and though women usually marry younger, more married women stay at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more afterwards return to fuller part-time job. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money, and running the house, according to the abilities and interests of each of them.

6. According to the passage, around the year 1900 most women married ____.

A. at about twenty-five

A. would be healthy enough to take paid jobs

B. was usually expected to die fairly soon

C. was unlikely to find a job if she wanted one

D. would expect to work till she died

9. According to the passage, the women of today usually____.

A. marry instead of getting paid work

B. marry before they are twenty-five

C. have more children under fifteen

D. have too few children

10. The best title for this passage is____.

听力原文: A British study of how diet affects the health of new mothers and their babies produced the surprise finding that vegetarian women are more likely to have girls, one of the report's authors said yesterday.

In what is thought to be the first study of its kind, researchers at Nottingham University in central England found significant differences in the sex of babies born to vegetarian and meat and fish-eating women. They were examining the health conditions in vegetarian and non-vegetarian mothers, looking at things like hemoglobin levels, which show how much iron the mother has in her blood, and birth weights.

Altogether 5,942 pregnant women were involved in the study when they were booked in Nottingham's City Hospital during 2001. According to the researchers, vegetarian mothers were defined as pregnant women who avoided meat and fish. Nearly five percent were vegetarian among them, a total of more than 250 women.

The birth ratio in Britain is that for every 106 boys born there are 100 girls, that's pretty constant. In their sample group of vegetarians there were 81.5 boys born for every 100 girls.

To further test their surprise findings, they increased the sample number to what scientists called a "statistically significant" level. The study was extended for a further six months so that the sex of more babies could be looked at. The results, covering around 150 more vegetarian women, were" just about exactly the same".

The study also found that vegetarian mothers were less likely to smoke during pregnancy -- 10 percent did so, compared with 20 percent of meat-eaters.

A.Vegetarian women are more likely to have girls.

B.Non-vegetarian women are more likely to have girls.

C.Vegetarian women are more likely to have boys.

D.Vegetarian women are more likely to smoke during pregnancy.

People all over the world know Wimbledon as the centre of lawn tennis.

In 1874 it was a country village, but it was the home of the All England Croquet Club. The Club had been there since 1864. A lot of people played croquet in England at that time and enjoyed it, but the national championships did not attract many people. So the Club had very little money.

"This new game of lawn tennis seems to have plenty of action (精彩场面), and people like watching it," they thought. "Shall we allow people to play lawn tennis on some of our beautiful croquet lawns?"

In 1877, Wimbledon held the first world lawn tennis championships (men's singles).

Wimbledon grew. There was some surprise and doubt, of course, when the Club allowed women to play in the first women's singles championship in 1884. But the ladies played well—even in long skirts that hid their legs and feet. Until 1907 the winners, both men and women, were always British, but since 1936 the victory has usually gone to an American or an Australian. British people were very happy when an English girl, Ann Jones, won the championship in 1969.

Two People, Two Paths

You must be familiar with the situation: Dad&39;s driving, Mum&39;s telling him where to go. He&39;s sure that they need to turn left, but she says it&39;s not for another two blocks. Who has the better sense of direction? Men or women?

They both do,a new study says. But in different ways.

Men and women, Canadian researchers have found, have different methods of finding their way. Men look quickly at landmarks (地标) and head off in what they think is the right direction.Women, however, try to picture the whole route in detail and then follow the path in their head.

"Women tend to be more detailed," said Edward Cornell, who led the study. "While men tend to be a little bit faster and.., a little bit more intuitive (直觉感知的). "

In fact, said Cornell, "sense of direction" isn&39;t one skill but two. "

The first is the "survey method". This is when you see an area from above, such as a printed map. You can see, for example, where the hospital is, where the church is and that the supermarket is on its right.

The second skill is the "route method". This is when you use a series of directions. You start from the hospital, then turn left, turn right, go uphill-- and then you see the supermarket.

Men are more likely to use the survey method while women are more likely to use one route and follow directions.

Both work and neither is better. Some scientists insist that these different skills have a long history, they argue it is because of the difference in traditional roles.

In ancient times, young men often went far away with the older men to fish or hunt.. The trip took hours or days and covered unfamiliar places. The only way to know where you were was to use the survey method to remember landmarks--the mountains, the lakes and so on.

The women, on the other hand, took young girls out to find fruits and plants. These activities were much closer to home but required learning well--used paths. So, women&39;s sense of space was based on learning certain routes.

When finding his way Dad tends to rely on __________. 查看材料

A.his intuitive knowledge

B.his book knowledge

C.mum"s assistance

D.the police"s assistance

ADHD Linked to Air Pollutants

Children have an increased risk of attention problems, seen as early as grade school, if their morns inhaled (吸入) a certain type of air pollution when they were pregnant. That&39;s the finding of a new study. Released when things aren&39;t burned completely, this pollution is known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs. The biggest sources of these PAHs: the burning of fossil fuels, wood and trash. Frederica Perera works at Columbia University&39;s Mailman School of Public Health in New York City. She researches how exposure to things in the environment affects children&39;s health. In a new study, she and her team studied the exposure to air pollution of 233 nonsmoking pregnant women in New York City. Because burning tobacco can spew (排放) PAHs into the air and lungs, Perera&39;s team focused on nonsmokers. The researchers wanted to probe (探查) other sources of PAHs, ones that would have been hard for an individual to avoid.
The team started by testing the blood of each woman during pregnancy. The reason: Any PAHs in a woman&39;s blood would also be available to the baby in her womb. Nine years later, the researchers investigated signs of attention problems in these children, now age 9. They asked each child&39;s mother a series of questions. These included whether her child had problems doing things that needed sustained (长期的) mental effort, such as homework or games with friends. The scientists also asked if the kids had trouble following instructions or made frequent, careless mistakes. All of these can be symptoms of a disorder called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. About one in 10 U.S. children has ADHD. Among the women studied, traffic and home heating were the primary sources of air pollution exposure, Perera and her team suspect.
Some of these women had low levels of PAHs in their blood. Others had high levels. Those with high levels were five times as likely to have children who showed attention problems by age 9. The new findings were published on November 5 in the journal PLOS ONE

Perera and her team chose nonsmoking pregnant women all over America. 查看材料

听力原文: Researching friendship, psychologist Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their sex,the results were completely clear. Women have more friendships than men,and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is“marked and unmistakable”.

More than two-thirds of the single men,Rubin interviewed, could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person,or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress. “Most women. ”says Rubin,“identified at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn to in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives. ”

“In general,”Rubin writes in her new book,“women's friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men's relationships are marked by shared activities. ”“Even when a man is said to be a best friend,”Rubin writes,“the two share little about their innermost feelings. Whereas a woman's closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave fl failing marriage,it wasn't unusual to hear a man say he didn't know his friend's marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa. ”

(33)

A.Men spend more nights in their friends'home than women.

B.Women are much more talkative than men.

C.Women enjoy more and better friendships than men.

D.Men have more difficulty remembering names than women.
