听力原文: The old idea that talented children "burn themselves out" in the early years, and, therefore, are subjected to failure and at worst, mental illness, is unfounded. As a matter of fact, the outstanding thing that happens to bright kids is that they are very likely to grow into bright adults.

To find this out, 1,500 gifted people were followed up to their 35th year with the results as follows:

On adult intelligence tests, they scored as high as they had as children. They were, as a group, in good health physically and mentally. 84 percent of their group were married and seemed content with their lives.

About 70 percent had graduated from college, though only 30 percent had graduated with honours. A few had even dropped out, but nearly half of these had returned to graduate.

Of the men, 80 percent were in one of the professions or in business management or semiprofessional jobs. The women who had remained single had office, business, or professional occupations.

The group had published 90 books and 1,500 articles in scientific, scholarly, and literary magazines and had collected more than 100 patents.

In a material way they did not do badly either. Average income was considerably higher among the gifted people, especially the men, than for the country as a whole, despite their comparative youth.

In fact, far from being strange, most of the gifted were turning their early promise into practical reality.

(33)

A.They are likely to fail in later life.

B.They are likely to grow into bright adults.

C.They are easy to gain success.

D.They are unlikely to burn themselves out.

It's very interesting to note where the debate about diversity is taking place. It is taki
ng place primarily in political circles. Here at the College Fund, we have a lot of contact with top corporate leaders; none of them is talking about getting rid of those instruments that produce diversity. In fact, they say that if their companies are to compete in the global village and in the global market place, diversity is an imperative. They also say that the need for talented, skilled Americans means we have to expand the pool means promoting policies that help provide skills to more minorities, more women and more immigrants. Corporate leaders know that if that doesn't occur in our society, they will not have the engineers, the scientists, the lawyers, or the business managers they will need.

Likewise, I don't hear people in the academy saying. "Let's go backward. Let's go back to the good old days, when we had a meritocracy (which was never true — we never had a meritocracy, although we've come close to it in the last 30 years) ". ! recently visited a great little college in New York where the campus had doubled its minority population in the last six years. I talked with an African American who has been a professor there for a long time, and she remembers that when she first joined the community, there were fewer than a handful of minorities on campus. Now, all of us feel the university is better because of the diversity. So where we hear this debate is primarily in political circles and in the media — not in corporate board rooms or on college campuses.

The word "imperative" in the first paragraph most probably refers to something ______.

A.superficial

B.remarkable

C.debatable

D.essential

听力原文: Every student of American history knows that George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson were the first three Presidents of the United States, but what else do they know about these interesting men? George Washington was a quiet man. He liked to hunt and fish. He liked to give parties, and he also liked to go to bed early. His parties always ended at 9:00 p.m. After he was retired, he lived on his farm.

John Adams was a bright and serious man. He liked to study law and history. After he was retired, he returned to his home in Boston. He liked to write about politics. He wrote many famous letters to the next president, Thomas Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson was a very talented man. In some ways he was like George Washington. He liked living on a farm, and he liked riding horses and hunting. He had other interests, too. He liked to play the violin, liked to sing, and liked speaking foreign languages. After he was retired, he returned to one of his other interests, designing the buildings for the University of Virginia.

When you are studying history, remember that the people in the books are more than names. Don't be afraid to go to the library and find out more about their qualities.

(30)

A.Washington, Adams arid Jefferson are most famous in the history of the United States.

B.Washington, Adams and Jefferson had many different interests.

C.Washington, Adams and Jefferson returned home after they were retired.

D.Washington, Adams and Jefferson were the first three Presidents.

Books are not Nadia Konyks thing. Her mother, hoping to attract her, brings them home from
the library, but Nadia rarely shows an interest. Instead, like so many other teenagers, Nadia, 15 , is addicted to the internet. She regularly spends at least six hours a day in front of the computer. Nadia checks her e-mail and reads carefully through myyearbook. com, a social networking site, reading messages or posting updates on her mood. She searches for music videos on youtube. com and logs onto gaiaonline. com, a role-playing site where members exchange identities as cartoon characters. But she spends most of her time on quizilla. com or fan fiction. net, reading and commenting on stories written by other users and based on books, television shows or movies. Her mother, Deborah Konyk, would prefer that Nadia read books for a change. But at this point, Ms. Konyk said, "Im just pleased that she reads something anyway. " Children like Nadia lie at the heart of a passionate(狂热的)debate about just what it means to read in the digital age. As teenagers scores on standardized reading tests have declined, some argue that the hours spent surfing the Internet is the enemy of reading—reducing literacy, destroying attention spans and a valuable common culture that exists only through the reading of books. But others say the Internet has created a new kind of reading, one that schools and society should not discount. The web inspires a teenager like Nadia, who might otherwise spend most of his leisure time watching television, to read and write. Even talented book readers like Zachary Sims, 18, of old Greenwich, Conn. , crave the ability to quickly find different points of view on a subject and talk with others online. Some children with dyslexia(诵读困难)or other learning difficulties, like Hunter Gaudet, 16, of Somers, Conn. , have found it far more comfortable to search and read online.

The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 means______.

A.Nadia prefers not to be a writer

B.Nadia doesn"t like to buy books

C.Nadia treats reading books as a piece of cake

D.Nadia shows no interest in reading books
